Chapter-2

Getting along Giah

Larry sat there with his mouth gapping, he was still confused as to why those kids there hated him so much; for all he knew Larry was there just to help them. Had it not been for his reasons he would’ve left the room by now. He looked over his shoulder towards James seeking a reaction; James just shrugged a smile, got up and whispered something to the in-charge.

“You all must now leave. Giah you stay behind.” He said clearing his throat at the last line.

While everyone left, Giah sat there sweating. She knew she was in trouble. Ryan gave her an assuring smile but she knew that even he was helpless. Larry could then make out that James had asked the in-charge for the weakest kid in the group and it was Giah, so that he could apply the British policy of divide and rule. Eventually, even the in-charge left.

“Hi Giah” James said calmly. The only reason he was treating the kids so soberly was because he understood how devastated they were now and in order to win their confidence he had to be a bit over polite. Giah looked up with a wrinkled face, she was visibly stressed. James could read that, but Larry had other plans so he interrupted a little before he should’ve; “Giah, will you tell us what happened please?” he blurted out in a single breath. James gave him a death glare. “What?” Larry mouthed in return. “We need to talk officer” James said pointing towards the door. “Giah, sweetheart calm down a bit till then, we aren’t here to hurt you. Trust me.” He said looking straight into her eyes and her face muscles relaxed a bit. It was the tone her father used with her when he was on her side. She could just relate. She saw the two men walking out of the door, with the door slightly open she could see they were discussing something but couldn’t hear a word; and like another good girl that she was, she wasn’t even curious much.

“Officer, why you don’t get it, this isn’t the right way of tackling a child.” James said with a concern in his voice and a calm expression on his face, as he knew Giah could still watch him.

“See Detective, you don’t get it, these are teenagers, they rebel more if you mellow down with them” Larry tried to make a point.

“It’s the other way round. Listen, just trust me once and let me handle this my way. Just trust me.” James said looking straight towards Larry. Larry was unsure, but his inner voice told him to agree to James, so he just nodded a yes and went inside the room; James followed with a light smile on his face looking directly towards Giah.

Studying psychology and all the experience James had worked miracles for him when it came to persuading people, even children. He was an honest man himself, but extra persuasion powers just came handy all the time. He sat on his chair, directly facing Giah across the table in between, only a dim light was on and the curtains were down. It all looked like some FBI interrogation room to him there.

“So Giah, you like lights?” He started.

“mm.. yea…Yes sir.” Giah looked up and fumbled out.

“Well good then” James got up as he said and pulled up all the curtains and filled the room with loads of light and brightness. He saw the tension on Giah’s face mellow down. “You like it now child?” James asked sitting down in his chair again.

Giah nodded with a faint smile. She couldn’t stop looking outside. She loved outdoors; at least those made her feel she was still free. The outdoors time at the centre were just 5pm to 6pm every evening, that was cut every too time she was on duty of cleaning the room or utensils at the kitchen. Although the outdoors for the children at the centre meant only a small garden inside the fences and walls of the extended area, she still waited eagerly for that one hour every day.

“So Giah how is it here? Does every one treat you good? You can tell me anything you want.” James said looking straight towards her.

“Yeah I’m all good. Thanks.” She politely answered.

“So you like it outside?”

“mm.. yes.. but they don’t take us outside much, it’s just one hour every week.” She said with a sad face, still looking outside.

“Oh! Don’t worry, if you help me out, I might just talk them into increasing the timings” James said looking towards her with a smile.

“You would? Really?” Giah almost shouted in glee looking towards him with a sparkly smile. In a very long while had she caught herself smiling like that and that made her lighten up more.

James now felt all boosted up. He knew now he was close.

“So Giah, tell us what happened that night? Please!”

Larry shifted in his chair and got himself back to the conversation, he was getting irritated of a few seconds ago.

“umm… I would’ve.. but… you’ll get us into more trouble.. the lawyer says that all the time.. I don’t know… I mean I do trust you.. but he says..I shouldn’t trust anyone.”

“Oh” James said forming an O with his lips. Larry grunted at the back in frustration to James’ dumb reply.

“Giah, we are here to help you, and we can only if you tell us the truth, the lawyer has sent us.” Larry lied through his teeth trying to convince the girl. Giah made a face in return and looked towards James to confirm. James just smiled.

“Trust me Giah we aren’t here to harm you or any of your friends. Trust me. We just want to get this off from you all and get you back to your parents as soon as possible.” James said after a pause.

“okay.. I will… I will tell you…” she trailed with tears in her eyes at the mention of her parents. She did miss them a lot. Of course her friends content her, but parents still stay important and she couldn’t deny that.

Larry pushed the recording button on and waited for her to speak, so did James.

Giah pulled in a deep breath and started; “It all started on that camping trip with our English teacher, Mr. Richards, the one whose wife was alleged to be killed by us later. But trust me we didn’t kill her. We didn’t.”

Giah had burst into tears by then and James went to her to comfort her a bit. The session was going to take longer that Larry could survive so he went out for a smoke till the sniffs got over.
