" Kre!!! Come on!!! It's just the mall!" I exclaimed, exasperated. I was going to the mall with my best and only friend, Kareena Parkinson. I know I might sound like the cliché girl with only one friend. That wasn't the case with me at all. In fact, my life was nothing like a usual teenager's, nor was I.

I woke up to blinding white walls and a splitting headache. Before I could look around, the door to the room opened and a woman wearing a white uniform walked in with a clipboard and a pen. She looked very surprised to see me awake but covered it up quickly. With a wide smile, she asked me, " How are you dear? Did you sleep well?" obviously trying to make small talk. However, her smile was contagious and I found myself smiling back and answering, " Yes I did thank you." As I was talking, she walked over to the table beside my bed. While she was writing something on her clipboard, I looked around the room. It was fully white and my bed was one of the only things in the room. Other than that, there was the table, a chair and the door. I just realised that I had never seen that room before in my life. "Um, I... Do you know where I am?" I asked felling very awkward.
A sympathetic expression crossed her face and she settled into the chair beside my bed with a neutral face. " You are at the Brooklyn hospital dear," she said gently. I was confused. Why would I be in a hospital? The last I remembered... A horrific realisation dawned on me. I did not remember anything at all. I racked my brain for something, anything, but I drew up blank. She had apparently seen my expression and offered me a comforting smile. " I have something to tell you..." she trailed off, looking uncomfortable. "But I'll go and get the doctor first ok? Oh, and I am Marissa your nurse," she added, sheepishly.
While waiting for Marissa to return with the doctor, I was absentmindedly playing with my hair, before realizing its color, brown. Suddenly, an image of a boy, around 17, flashed before my eyes and I noticed that he had hair similar to mine. However, it disappeared as soon as it came. While I was wondering what that who that boy was, the door opened again and a tall man, wearing a white coat and a stethoscope around his neck walked in, with Marissa on his heels. He was the perfect picture of a doctor, he was even holding an injection. I cowered at the sight of the huge injection, even though I had no idea why I was afraid of it. I didn’t know anything about it, just its name. My ‘fear’ was purely instinctual. Upon seeing me, the doctor smiled gently.
“How are you? You probably have a headache so I’ll finish soon and let you rest,” he said, wearing a fatherly smile.
Then, he proceeded to explain my ‘condition’ to me.
“You had an accident a few days ago and your head suffered quite a blow. You were brought here and we found that you brain has been affected and you have lost your memory…” he trailed off uneasily. We were not able to find your family or friends, so you will have to go to an orphanage after you are physically healed. However, we think that you can get your memory back, you just need a trigger from your past connecting to your present,” he said optimistically.
I couldn’t really process all of what he said after he told me that I lost my memory. He didn’t wait for a response; instead, he asked Marissa to attend to me and left.
“You can ask me if you have any questions dear,” she said, trying to help me.
“I… what does he mean by a trigger? Do I need to remember an incident or will my memory come back when I see someone from my past?” I asked, trying to comprehend the information that had been thrown at me all at once.
“We don’t really know dear but first, you should focus on getting better first, before trying to get your family back,” she told me and smiled comfortingly.
“Also, we thought that Hailey is a good name for you what do you think?” she asked excitedly. I offered her a tiny smile and told her that it was a great name.

That was how I got to know of my condition and my name. After my physical injuries were healed, I was put in this orphanage. I have been here for a few weeks and met Kareena here and we became fast friends.
“ Hailey!! Stop day-dreaming!!” Kareena yelled, waving her hands in front of my face and breaking me out of my thoughts. After that, we had a pretty normal day at the mall, except…
