Chapter 7

Valerie’s P.O.V.

My phone rings early the next Saturday morning. I pick it up and yawn.

“Valerie Hart, do you know what day it is today?”

“Saturday?”

“Yes. But there’s also something very special about this specific Saturday.”

“And what would that be Ashton Fletcher Irwin?” I ask, sitting up.

“Well Wilhelmina,” He says with a laugh. I roll my eyes. “It happens to be an anniversary of sorts.”

“An anniversary?” I ask. “Like a birthday?”

“Yes, a birthday.” He says. “But it’s not mine, so don’t have a heart attack.”

“Whose birthday is it?”

“Well, his name starts with an ‘M’.”

“Michael?” I ask.

“Yes, and I need your help with decorations. I’m in charge of them and unfortunately I have no idea how to decorate for a birthday party. That’s why I need your help.”

“And you had to wake me up this early for a party that I’m assuming is later tonight?”

“Hey, it’s never too early to hear your grouchy morning voice.”

I laugh and cover my mouth so my mom doesn’t hear me. “When do you need me to be ready?”

“By tonight, but I want to hang out with you. So like, right now.”

“Come by in like, forty minutes. I need to shower and get ready.”

“Well, there’s kind of a problem with that.”

“What’s the problem?” I ask.

“I’m outside your apartment.”

“Like in the parking lot?”

“No. I’m standing in front of your door. Right now.”

“Ashton, my mom’s asleep.”

“Oh come on, we’re not having sex or anything.” He says.

I groan. “Okay. I’ll be there in a second.” I get out of bed, pull my hair up into a ponytail, and walk down the hall. I open the door and Ashton smiles brightly at me.

“Good morning, Valerie Hart.” He says with a grin. “You look ravishing as usual.”

“I don’t know if that’s sarcasm or sincerity, but it’s too early for me to care either way.”

He laughs and steps inside. I close the door behind him. “Follow me.” I say, walking down the hall. I open my bedroom door and point to my bed. “Sit down.”

“Commanding, today, are we?” He asks, raising an eyebrow.

“You’d be lying if you said it didn’t turn you on.” I say with a smirk.

“Dammit, Valerie. It’s too early for this.” He says with a lazy smile.

“I’m gonna go shower and get ready. You get to wait here. And if my mom wakes up, don’t freak her out.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it, Valerie Hart.”

I roll my eyes and grab my outfit, which consists of a t-shirt and jeans, underwear (obviously), and a pair of socks. I walk into the bathroom and start getting ready.
