Ruby's POV
Our extended winter break has already ended and I've been back at school for a week. I was glad for the extended break because that allowed me to train Austen, so that he would be more prepared for our upcoming battle with Destiny and Griffon, the sapphire and the blue topaz.
Despite Austen's constant suggestion for me to think this through carefully, I was excited. Challenging strong opponents always gets me excited, this battle being no exception. The only thing I'm worried about is Austen. Although I've trained him for almost a month, his lack of fighting in the last year and a half really made him slow and rusty.
I snapped out of my thoughts as the bell for the last class rang. I quickly packed my bags and hurried to my locker. I was supposed to meet Austen after school so that we can follow Destiny and Griffon, in order to confront them in a head-on battle. Just thinking about that made my blood rush.
The other day from spying on Griffon and Destiny, Austen and I learned that they were planning on attacking a factory near the mountains in order to take over and use it as home base. Austen and I are planning to stop them because we know killing innocent humans for their own benefit is not okay.
When I got to my locker, Austen was already there waiting for me, nervously twisting his hair and messing up his wavy brown locks. I was a little annoyed. I've told him before to not let others know that we know each other, but he's not very good at listening to instructions. I quickly grabbed my things from the locker and walked towards the doors. "Let's go," I called to Austen, who was still stuck to the wall, eyes filled with uncertainty. He peeled himself away from the wall and followed me.
We were hiding up a tree, near the only path that leads to the factory, waiting for Griffon and Destiny to arrive. We've been there for almost half an hour and they were supposed to have arrived 15 minutes ago. I was growing impatient. Something in my gut was telling me that this was a trap. As though they sensed my suspicion, Destiny and Griffon appeared at that moment.
"Let's go," I said. Austen and I jumped down from the tree and landed in front of our two enemies.
"My, my. Look who we have here!" Destiny exclaimed with an exaggerated gasp and an annoyingly wide grin on her small face. "We were expecting you," she continued gleefully. My eyes shifted to Destiny. What? How did they know about our plan? Once again, as if reading my thoughts Destiny asked, "You didn't think you two were the only ones spying, did you?"
"Hold on," Austen said. "You knew we were spying on you? But... how? We made sure no one was following us," Austen asked, bewildered.
Destiny giggled, "Oh, don't worry, you weren't followed."
"We just know what you're thinking," Griffon added, a hint of amusement in his voice. I frowned. How was this possible? Destiny and Griffon shouldn't know about our plan at all, so how did they know we planned an ambush? It really did seem like they could read our minds. I breathed in sharply. They were telling the truth, they really do know what we're thinking. As this realization dawned on me, I glared at the two Water fairies. The smug expressions on their faces proved me right.
"You can read our minds," I simply stated.
"Ruby, you can't seriously think...Oh my god, is that their secondary power?" Austen asked in disbelief.
