"Pizza's done!" I yelled. I heard four sets of footsteps bounding down the stairs towards the kitchen. I saw them come into the kitchen in the order from oldest to youngest. They came towards me with hunger in their eyes. I giggled as they took the paper plates with pizza slices on them. They ran up the steps of the stairs while balancing their pizza on the plates. I grabbed myself a slice and was half way up the stairs when I heard screams coming from the girls bedroom. I dropped my plate and ran up the stairs as fast as my legs could carry me. I bursted through the door. The scene in front of me was one of utter horror.
Amber was on the ground, trying to hold her lower left leg. Her Tibia and Ulna had snapped in half, and was poking out of her flesh. Her leg just dangling by the tissue that was left unscathed. I knew nothing of what had happen, I didn't even care about what had happened, all I knew was that it was only a matter of minutes before she bled to death.
"Lilly, Kara, and Tera, try to keep her calm, I'll be right back, ok?" I yelled calmly at them. I tried not to act, sound, or look panicked, but in the end I had failed. They nodded slowly and proceeded towards Amber slowly. I watched for a second as I saw Lilly look a little sick, as if she was about to vomit.
"Lilly? Come here a second." I commanded. She gladly walked over to me, getting away from Amber.
"Yes Noel?" she asked.
"Lilly do you want to come with me?" I asked. She nodded vigorously. I took her hand and we ran to the nearest phone. I dialed 911 and waited for the operator to answer.
One ring. two rings.
"Hello? This is 911 what's your emer-" the woman said.
"I'm at 1325 Main Street. Come quick with an ambulance. A two year old girl is bleeding erratically." I screeched through the phone as I heard Amber scream in pain. Lilly grabbed onto the hem of my shorts.
"Ma'am the ambulance is on it's way. Please don't hang up until they arrive." She said trying to calm me down.
"Ok." was all I could say.
"Ma'am what is your name and age?" she asked. I gulped taking a deep breath, feeling a lump build up in my throat.
"My name is Anna Noel Hatch, I'm a minor that is 13 years of age and I'm in the orphanage taking care of four little girls with the foster mom who is on some date." I said hurriedly.
"Ok Anna do you hear the sirens of the vehicle?" she asked. I listened and heard a faint sound of a siren.
"Yes ma'am." I replied.
"Noel!!!!" I heard Tera and Kara scream in unison.
"Lilly take the phone and tell the woman on the phone your name and age and if she asks you to do something then DO IT!" I told her emphasizing the "do it" part. She nodded as I handed her the phone.
"Hello lady?" she said. I ran to the room to see the three girls in a huge pool of blood. I knew I had to stop the blood flow to her leg.
"Tera find a scarf of rope or anything to tie around her leg!" I shouted urgently as I ran over to amber. Kara was holding Amber's head in her lap. Amber was slowly going out of consciousness. I shook her awake. She looked at me with such pain in her eyes. Tera came over with a ribbon. I took it and tied it tightly around Amber's injured leg so it would cut off the blood flow, and hopefully slow down the bleeding, and give the EMS more time, and hopefully save her.
A few minutes passed. I heard the front door and footsteps come up the hallway.
"In here!" I yelled. Shortly after I said that two men came in with a gurney. They picked Amber up gently and laid her down on the gurney. They headed down the stairs and to the ambulance. I ran after them along with Tera, Kara, and last of all Lilly following closely behind me.
"Sir can we go to the hospital with her?" I asked one man. He looked at me and I guess he saw all the worry and pain that was in my eyes.
"I suppose so." he said. "Get in before I change my mind." he said while motioning for us to get in the ambulance.
It was a short ride back to the hospital, yet it seemed like an eternity. They took her to the emergency surgery room. Tera, Kara, Lilly, and I were covered in Ambers blood. We couldn't leave, nor could we get clean clothing to wear. So we all sat on the cold, hard, tile floor, not wanting to get the chairs bloody, waiting for news on Amber and for Ms. Huddleston to show up.
"WHERE ARE THOSE LITTLE BITCHES!?!" Ms. Huddleston screamed as she stormed in the waiting room. The girls clung to me in fear. Then she caught sight of us. "NEVER MIND!" she shouted as she stalked over to us. I stood up off the ground. I moved the girls behind me to protect them. I knew she was furious. "HE WAS ABOUT TO PROPOSE TO ME! BUT NO, YOU JUST HAD TO CALL 911 JUST TO SAVE AMBER'S STUPID LITTLE LIFE DIDN'T YOU?!" she yelled at us. She grabbed Lilly out from behind me and slapped her across the face. I was fine with being treated like a maid, given all the tasks, yelled at, but letting a little innocent girl get slapped for no reason, that's where I draw the line. I stomped on Ms. Huddleston's foot and grabbed Lilly back from her. I looked at Lilly who's face had a red mark from the slap with tears pouring from her eyes down her face. Suddenly I was pulled away from the girls and turned around to face the hideous monster they called a "foster mom" right in the face.
"I'm not scared of you. You're just a selfish, greedy, lowlife of a bitch! You slapped a little girl for no reason!" I shouted. She looked at me with a blank expression.
"How dare you call me a bitch! You're damn lucky I even allowed you in the foster home!" she spat at me. I looked her directly in the eyes.
"NO I DON'T CARE IF I CALL YOU A BITCH! YOU ABUSED A 4 YEAR OLD GIRL FOR NO F*CKING REASON! I DON'T CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO ME, AS LONG AS THESE BEAUTIFUL YOUNG GIRLS ARE FAR AWAY FROM THE LIKES OF YOU! EVEN IF I HAVE TO DIE TO PROTECT THEM FROM YOU I WILL DO SO! YOU LEFT ME IN CHARGE, JUST SO YOU COULD GO ON A STUPID DATE, THAT WAS NOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN TAKING CARE OF THE ORPHANS YOU SAID YOU WOULD CARE FOR, DO ANYTHING FOR, AND I DON'T BELIEVE THAT YOU ACTUALLY MEANT WHAT YOU SAID! I'M STANDING UP FOR THESE GIRLS BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL! I AM ANNA NOEL HATCH, AND I'M CALLING THIS WOMAN OUT FOR LEAVING US ALONE TO GO ON A DATE, FOR NOT CARING FOR US, NOT TAKING CARE OF US! YOU CALL YOURSELF A FOST-" I was interrupted by her punching me in the face. I fell to the floor. I could taste the iron in my blood. I spat out the blood on the floor. I was about to get up off the floor when Ms. Huddleston got on top of me and pinned me to the ground. Her hands wrapped around my neck, strangling me, trying to suffocate me. I was about to black out when I looked over to the girls. Their faces full of shock and horror. That was the last straw. All my instincts kicked in. I kicked her off of me and landed on top of her this time using a move I never knew I knew. When I did the move she passed out. I started to punch her in the face repeatedly until I was dragged off of her. I fell limp as I was dragged. The person who was dragging me away from her pulled me up to my feet and made me face them. When I did look them in the eyes I knew exactly who they were. Their lips were moving but I couldn't hear anything.
"I don't know what you're saying, I can't hear anything." I mumbled. The man looked worried for a moment then everything came back to me.
"Why were you beating that woman?!" he shouted while shaking me.
"Y-you're Steve Rodgers, C-Captain America." I whisper so only he could hear. He nodded and I hugged him. I must have took him by surprise because he tensed up. "That woman was my foster mom, she slapped a little girl for no reason, I was left alone with four girls, one of which is in surgery right now. That woman is horrible. She hit me first, I said I would protect those girls from her even if I had to die." I whispered into his ear before I blacked out.
