Song of the Chapter: Paquerette (Without Me), With Confidence
It was now the second week into the European tour, the bands doing shows, acoustic sets, and interviews all over. Today also happened to be Eva's birthday, a day she was not looking forward to celebrating.
Eva's blue hair hung messily on the pillow of her bunk as she rolled over for another time. Sleep was never easy for her to get but tour bunks never really helped. She could hear soft murmurs of voices in the front room and decided to just get up and give up any hope of actually sleeping. When she walked out of the bunk area and started down the hallway, she saw Tony standing at the end with a big smile on his face. She was having fewer bad days, and while they did still happen, it was rare. Since Tony found her in the venue, they'd been practically inseparable which not only put every other band member and Theo at ease, but made both of them extremely happy.
But the grin on his face today was something mysterious, like he was hiding something. "What did you do?" Eva joked as she walked closer to him and wrapped her arms around his waist. He reciprocated the hug before chuckling a little. "Just go get dressed, I'm taking you out." Eva laughed a little before going and throwing on black shorts and a t shirt, a charcoal sweater to tie it all together. She walked out as Tony was finishing putting on his shoes. "Ready?" she asked quietly from the hallway. He nodded and held his hand out for her to take which she did without a second thought. They walked down the road to a diner, eating quietly with mild chatter every once in a while. Eva was eating semi-regularly again, three meals a day that all were proper portions. She was getting back to looking healthy and every time one of the bands saw her walking around, they smiled a little bigger knowing she was okay.
"So, today's kind of a big deal isn't it?" Tony said nonchalantly as he sipped his coffee. Eva looked at him questioningly, skimming her brain for an important factor. "What do you mean? We do the same sets every night." Tony rolled his eyes and smiled. "You're officially sixteen." His words echoed through her head slightly as she allowed herself to remember. Eva always hated her birthday. She didn't like attention, she didn't ever have much of a family to spend it with, and cake was sub par dessert food. Eva shrugged, sipping her water carefully before setting it down and meeting Tony's eyes. "I don't like my birthday much. I don't really care about it, especially this year." Sixteen was a number that Eva wasn't sure she'd make it to in all honesty. Maybe she had gotten worse since getting adopted but she had never felt better about life. If she had been in the adoption center, she was sure she wouldn't be alive right now. Eva looked down at the table and tried to ignore the daggers of Tony's stare.
Tony knew why Eva hated this year specifically. It was a topic in a late night talk while sitting outside of the buses. "E, I know you hate your birthday. But, we love you too much for it to just pass by. And you did make it to this year, so isn't that something to celebrate?" Eva thought for a second. It was hard ignoring all the thoughts that said she didn't deserve to have made it, the voices that wanted her dead. "But what about the people telling me I shouldn't have made it?" The silence ate at both of them for a second while Tony gathered his thoughts. "Those people are the people who never saw the real you, the you we all know and love and care about." She smiled and nodded, getting up from the table with Tony and hugging him tightly before they left the dining area to pay. The two walked back into the buses where Tony sat next to Eva as she chatted with Theo and Alex, their other friends in the background, occasionally yelling comments on the conversation. "We'll give you our gifts when you get home in a couple weeks," Theo said while smiling. Eva smiled back before finishing the conversation and hanging up.
"So, what are guys going to throw at me today?" Eva asked as she set her phone down and leaned into Tony's side. "I guess you'll have to find out." Eva smiled and rolled her eyes before standing up and walking out of the bus and into the venue. "Okay, fine then! Just walk away!" she heard Tony shout from the door of the buses while laughing. Eva only smiled and flipped him off before continuing forward.
