I always thought that I would go through high school alone. Maybe with a couple friends and the support of some teachers. Never did I think that I'd fall in love. His name was Jacob. When you'd look at him, you'd never expect him to date a girl like me. He was an athlete, a star one at that, and I was a bookworm who focused on school all the time. I guess opposites do attract, at least in my case.
The one problem was that I was keeping a huge secret from him. I have cancer, and I didn't want him to attach to me just so I could die the next day.
I developed it when I was 11. The doctors had warned my parents earlier on in my life that there was a chance, but they refused to believe it. I didn't need breathing tubes, it wasn't that bad, yet.
Telling him would probably be the hardest thing I've had to do, but I knew it was the right thing.
It was on Saturday night that I called him.
"Hey" I said to him.
"What's up?" He asked with his cheery, deep voice.
"Can you come over? Like right now, please." I said with a low voice.
"What's wrong babe?" He questioned me.
"Just please come over, I have to tell you something."
I hung up the phone and walked over to my bed and sat down. My head was in so many different places right now.
The doorbell rang after 10 minutes and I quickly rushed down the stairs to get it.
"What'd you need to talk to me about?" He asked as he walked into the house.
I grabbed his hand and led him up to my room and sat on my bed once again.
"Sit down please, this isn't something you want to be standing up for."
"Fine" He said to me as he sat down on the bed, grabbing my hand.
"I've been keeping a big secret from you, Jake." I mumbled.
"Just tell me, Kace" He replied with a worried tone.
"I have lung cancer, alright?!" I yelled at him, starting to cry.
"Oh my god...Kacie, why didn't you tell me this earlier?" He replied, wrapping his arms around me.
"I was worried you wouldn't want to date the sick cancer girl. No one does." I cried.
"I don't care if you have cancer, I'll still love you no matter what, Kace. You know that." He cried along with me.
"I'm sorry for not telling you, Jake."
"You're fine. Everything's alright."
"Can we go outside? I want to see the stars." I asked him.
"Whatever you want" He smiled at me with his whiter than white teeth.
We got up and went outside to my backyard and laid on the grass.
"They're beautiful." I sighed.
"Not as beautiful as you." Jacob said to me.
I'd never forget this night. It just went to show me, that true love really does exist.
