I freeze with fear as I watch Nicks silhouette disappear into the darkness.
Once again, that same feeling of aloneness returns.
Another low grumble rings in my ear a few feet behind.
I pick up my courage and turn around regretting it already.
I squeeze my eyes shut and face my head down as I turn slowly to face my opponent.
A single long breath beacons me to open my eyes as it did not come from my mouth.
My eyes flash open to be met with a tall man about 6 foot 5.
I stare up at his coco brown eyes in wonder, and fear.
"Sorry, I'm a bit hungry." he whispers.
Slung around his right shoulder was a rifle. He wore a black coat and the only reason I saw him was the reflection of the stars glimmering in his eyes.
He looks down at me studying my face before grabbing me by the arm and pulling me behind a wall.
He put his finger to his lips signalling me to stay quiet.
I don't know what it is about this man, but I do as he says.
Two shining dog tags hang low on his chest K. James is engraved at the top along a serial number and his date of birth.
"Who are you?" I whisper, my voice cracking.
"Lieutenant Kendall James, now zip it, they can hear us."
His light skin clashed with the dark back jacket he was wearing
His cropped brown hair messy and tangled.
I peered around the corner to see three Zombies patrolling the premises.
My breath caught in my throat and I pressed my back up against the wall for stability.
I didn't realise until now how close we were.
His right arm pressed firmly up against the wall at my head height while my nose was only inches away from pressing up against his chest.
I started to feel claustrophobic so I wiggled my way under his arm so I was standing behind him.
He turned around in confusion and a hint of amusement.
"No woman has ever wanted to get away from me." he smirked while I roll my eyes, thankful for the dim lighting as I could feel my cheeks burning up a little.
I turn around and look out behind us.
I see a flash of golden hair whip around the thick trunk of a pine tree.
Sophia?
"Are you planing on using that?" I whisper looking at his gun.
"Ran out of amo years back, just keep it to look staunch now." he whispers turning back to follow the Zombies movements.
Suddenly the closest Zombie to us falls to the ground, once again with an arrow through its decaying heart.
"Sophia." I smile to myself.
"What?" He questions wide eyed.
"It means we go!" I say stumbling off weakly.
"We're going the other way." he laughs.
"We're not going anywhere!" I exclaim.
"Oh yes we are princess, besides your helpless to stop me anyway you're injured!" He laughs, picking me up and throwing me over his shoulder as Sophia shoots the last Zombie.
He carries me to the English rooms at the other end of the school.
*********
The smell of the room was musty and foul but I tried to ignore it.
He sits me down on the floor and pulls out a first aid kit from a little handbag around his side.
He whips off my bandage without warning causing me to yelp in pain.
"Hold still." he commands whilst inspecting the gash.
"Was it a Zombie?" His voice low and unsympathetic.
"No, window." I mumble under my breath.
Once again a feeling of claustrophobia creeps up over my skin making me uncomfortable.
I inhale a deep breath trying to slow my heart rate back down.
"Am I making you uncomfortable?" He doesn't look up but simply pours a stinging substance on my cut.
I cringe and tensely reply. "Just a little claustrophobia."
He chuckles to himself before wrapping another bandage firmly around my knee.
"That should do it for now but it's a messy cut you'll need'a look after it." his eyes met with mine and it was as if I could read his soul.
"I'm Kendall." he smiles outstretching a buff arm for me to shake.
I hesitate. "Kiara." the words fall out of my mouth but I don't shake his hand.
He awkwardly plays it off by running his fingers through his hair.
He half smiles before turning away to clean up the blood that had oozed from my leg and onto the hard concrete floor.
A loud and pounding banging repeated rhythmically on the closed door.
Our eyes snapped in its direction.
The sound was defining.
The rhythm circled over and over in my head painfully.
Bang!!, Bang!!, Bang!!
Over and over.
The rhythm making me excruciatingly uncomfortable.
Then on the window the same pattern started.
Bang!!, Bang!!, Bang!!
It was driving me insane.
"Kendall?" I whispered "is it..."
"Very." he replied before I had time to finish my sentence.
Then it started again on the opposite wall
The sound surrounded us like circling sharks.
Bang!! Bang!!, Bang!!
The pounding in my heart started to drown out the sounds on the banging before it started once more on the fourth wall.
Then SMASH!!
I screamed.
Shards of glass cascaded down, raining on us like glitter.
Kendall jumped over me like a barrier as the shards of glass bounced off of his black leather jacket like bouncing balls.
I turned to look at what had caused the highest window to smash.
It was a rock with writing on it.
The words read. 'GET OUT NOW"
shivers slithered down my spine.
I looked at Kendall.
"I reckon we do as it says." he shrugged.
"But how? I don't wanna go out the door or window." I argued
"Neither." he muttered to himself. Our eyes scanned the room for a way out.
I had nearly given in to the pounding when my eyes fixated on a small closet on the corner of the room.
"What about that?" I said pointing towards it.
"Good idea." Kendall rushed towards the closet and inspected it.
He opened the door.
My mouth fell to the ground at the sight before me.
My tongue went dry I couldn't bare to look but couldn't tear my eyes away either.
There inside the closet was...
