As we approach the sanctuary, Liam hits the button. The door opens and we enter.
Every seemed ok so Liam took them to the cafeteria which was where my mom was, making food while we were gone. After they ate she showed them to the dorms so they could rest.
A few hours passed and I was ready to work on the buggy. I got all the tools and parts I thought I would need and was about to start.
"Do you even know what to do?" Clementine asked.
"Yeah I think." I say.
"Ok, stop. First you want to change the batteries out to see if it will turn over and if it does, drain the old gas if their is any and then put new new gas in and see if it will start." Clementine explained.
"How do you know all of this?" I asked.
"My stepdad was big on working on cars and stuff. I liked to help him." She answered.
"Your stepfather? What happened to your actual dad?"
"My stepfather is my actual dad because I've never met my father. I don't know anything about him. Mom would never tell me anything about him."
"Sounds like your stepdad was a good dad and you had a good life before all of this happened." I say peacefully.
"Don't get me wrong, I like what happened because if it didn't I wouldn't have met you, or anyone else, or leaned anything I did." She said with a smile.
"Yeah" I say.
We got to work on the buggy. It wouldn't start so we checked spark. No spark so we changed the spark plugs and wires, still no spark. We changed the distributor and then we had spark. It still wouldn't start. It wasn't getting any gas so we changed the fuel pump to see if it would get gas and it did. We try to start it the it puttered to life for a few seconds and then it died.
"The carburator needs to be cleaned and the engine needs to be ran for a little bit to get the bad gas out. I'll take the carburator and clean it tonight, but you need to get some sleep." Clementine says.
"You need sleep too plus I want to get this running tonight." I say.
"Both of you need sleep and I'll clean the carburator." Jack said as he walked around the corner
"Yes, sir. Goodnight." We say politely.
We walk to our rooms and say goodnight to each other then enter our rooms I walk over to my bed and fall on to it. It was more comfortable than my old bed or it could have been the fact I hadn't slept since the hospital. Either way I was comfortable and as I drifted in to sleep all I could think about was finishing the buggy with Clementine and then driving to town in it.
Morning I jumped out of my bed and exited to finish the buggy. I opened the door and I saw Jack.
"Go take a shower," he said. "You smell like gasoline."
I shut the door, take a shower, brush my teeth and then think how does this place have all of this stuff? The I continue getting ready. I find some good clothes for working and I walk out the door.
"That's better," he said with Clementine standing next to him.
"When did you get here?" I ask.
"I've been awake for an hour now. You slept in." She says.
"What time is it?" I ask
"10 am" Jack answered.
"Ok." I reply.
We walk down so I can get breakfast before we start working. Clementine slips away without me noticing. I get my breakfast sit down and start eating. Then I realized Clementine was gone.
"Where did Clementine go?" I asked.
"I don't know." Jack answered.
At that time I here a motor rumbling. I walk to the clearing to see the buggy sitting there with Clementine behind the wheel. I walk up to it.
"I want to drive." I say.
"Nope. You didn't help finish it so I get to drive it first." Clementine stated.
"Because you didn't wake me up." I argue.
"You should have set an alarm." Clementine says.
"Fine you win but I drive next." I say
I climb into the passenger seat, strap up and we drive outside. Jack pulls up on his motorcycle, Clementine hits the gas and the tires spin as we take off with Jack following us. We drive down the road to the end of the street.
We left the town right toward the hospital. Straight ahead was a dirt road.
A smile grew on Clementine's face as she slowly hit the gas. Her driving was not that bad and once we got on to the dirt road, she was sliding around corners like she was a proffessional. Meanwhile Jack was behind us trying to keep up with Clementine's driving.
"You want to lose him?" Clementine asked.
"We'll get in trouble once we go back." I state.
"Worth it!" Clementine says with a grin.
She turns the car down a small path. Their was a little mud that we had no problem going through but Jack was on a motorcycle. The bike slips in the mud but he wasn't going fast enough to get injured.
We were going down this small path in the woods you could tell no one had been down it in a while because their were leaves covering the path. The leaves flew up behind the buggy as we sped down the path.
We were now climbing up a hill and I could see an opening up ahead and Clementine slowed down as we approached it and stopped.
We were at the top of the hill that was completely clear of trees and we could see the town in front of us. We could tell that it was abandoned even from this distance. You could see vines growing off the buildings. She shuts off the buggy and we get out. She walks around to the front of the buggy and sits on the hood. I walk up to the side of the buggy and look at the town below.
"It looks so beautiful." Clementine says.
"Yeah," I say.
"I'm glad I met you," Clementine says with a smile on her face.
"Same," I say looking at the ground smiling.
"Everything that happened over the past month... I'm glad it did." She says. "All of our friends I made and everything we did. This buggy we fixed together. I have no regrets from this past month."
"Yeah." I say.
We talked for hours while sitting there, watched the sunset, and then we started our drive back. My first experience driving the buggy was nice and slow down the hill.
Clementine was falling asleep in the passenger seat. Then I heard rustling in the woods. I slowed the buggy to a stop and put it in park. Leaving it running, I walk over to the source of the sound, revolver held firmly in my hand.
As I peek into the woods, an infected comes running out at me. I have no time to react. He tackles me to the ground, throwing my Revolver out of my hand and on the ground. We're on the ground wrestling hand to hand but soon I start loosing the fight.
He pins me to the ground and he seemed to be getting stronger, like he was mutating. I started giving up as I looked over at Clementine who was still sound asleep.
I start thinking of everything I have to lose if I die. I thought about my friends and family...and Clementine. If I died now she would still be asleep and unable to defend herself in time and I am not letting her die.
I then remembered that I am indestructible and started fighting harder...harder than I ever fought before, but it wasn't enough. He was still getting stronger.
Then out of no where, a kid came flying out of the woods kicking the infected in the face throwing him off of me. The kid slits the infecteds throat with a knife.
I sit up and say, "thanks." As I look at the kid I could tell he was infected but he was the good type, like me or Clementine.
He had big ears and was tall like a dog. "Um... Hey," I say.
He looks at me with all his teeth showing and I could see he had razor sharp teeth like a wolf.
He walks up to me and sniffs in the air then backs off.
"Friend or for? Do I have to kill you too." He sniffs the air again and then looks at Clementine was still asleep in the buggy.
"You touch her and I'll kill you before you can yelp." I say aggressively.
"I won't hurt either of you. I'm Matthew." He says as he puts his paw like hand out.
"Oliver Sylum." I say as I shake his hand. "How old are you?" I ask.
"13. When the virus escaped it effected me like this instead of making me go crazy, but I got infected before everyone else so they were scared of me. They called me a monster and a freak." He said.
"I don't think you're a freak. I think what happened to you is awesome. I got half my face chopped off and survived. If anything, I'm the freak." I say.
"That sounds awesome." He says. "That explains the stitches across your face."
"Yeah," I say.
"Who's that?" He asked pointing at the still sleeping Clementine.
"She's Clementine." I answer. "Do you want to come with us? We have a sanctuary a few miles from here?" I say.
"Sure beats sleeping outside in the woods." He says.
We load up into the buggy. He rides on the back above the engine because we only have two seats up front. We start back down the hill then down the dirt road and to the sanctuary. It's dark out and I see Jack standing in the head lights.
"Who's that?" Matthew asked.
"Jack, he's like my guardian basically." I answered.
"Oh, are you in trouble?"he ask.
"Most certainly." I answer.
"Where have you two been! I've been worried sick." Jack says angrily.
"Well we were talking at the top of the mountain and lost track of time, then on the way back I got attacked and then he saved me." I explained.
"And who are you?" Jack asked.
"I'm Matthew. Obviously I'm infected unless you see dog kids running around like crazy." Matthew says jokingly,
"Well y'all get inside." Jack demands.
"Yes sir." I say.
We pull inside and I park the buggy. Matthew jumps off the back and I climb out the drivers side and walk over to Clementine who is still asleep. I pick her up and carry her to her room. I lay her in bed and then show Matthew where he will be sleeping which is on the other side of me. He climbs into the bed and curls up into a ball and falls asleep. I'm not really that tired so I jump into a shower and then brush my teeth. Then I get ready for bed. As I lay down I feel the soft bed against me as I drift off to sleep.
