“Jared! You’re gonna get us killed!” I screeched as the tousle-haired boy dragged me across the bustling traffic filled street. He just laughed and gave me a tug. “ C’mon Annie! It’s almost time!” We ran across the road, passed the sidewalk and disgruntled businessmen and stumbled on to the wet grass of the city park. We chased the day up the hill as it turned into night. “Annie, look.” Jared pointed at the sky, still breathless. I looked up just in time to see the sun sink low behind the horizon, leaving the stretching buildings of the skyline aglow with a warm, red light. The sky was painted with soft oranges and purples with pinprick stars starting to dance across the night. As I watched, gaping, Jared watched me. Shivering, partly from the evening breeze, partly from the indescribable view before me, I felt a hand on my shoulder. “I wanted to show you,” he whispered. I closed my eyes, leaning into his warmth.
“It’s beautiful.”
“It’s how beautiful you are to me.”
And then, I kissed him. Brushing his chapped lips to mine and holding his flushed face. He closed his eyes, and sighed deeply, smiling for a moment, then recoiling, he face contorting, his hands still on my shoulders.
“But Annie, I’m not what you think.”
“I know. You’re better.”
