she sat by the open window of her bedroom, admiring the stars, and the coolness of the summer night.
it was a little past midnight, so all rue could hear from the outside world was silence. she loved it.
rue had always preferred night over day. she could think better at night. the stars let her imagination run wild. she could dream at night, without having to fall asleep. but not daydreaming.
but even the isolation of her bedroom was not enough for rue. she needed to go out for a bit.
she carefully slipped on a pair of flip-flops and checked to make sure her parents were fast asleep. rue placed her phone in her back pocket, and slowly climbed out the window.
once safely on the ground, she looked behind her to make sure no one noticed her escape.
satisfied with her exit, she started walking on the sidewalk, silently.
she didn't have a destination, but then again, who has a specific place they want to go at 1am.
she kept walking down the street she grew up on, thinking about life and all that comes with it.
rue always had these deep thoughts at night. there were no distractions in the night, so she could easily let her mind wander.
she made it to the end of the street, but was still not happy. she turned the corner and kept walking further, until she was met by a small bench.
rue sat down and her eyes took in the scenery around her. the only light that shone was from the occasional street lights, and the moon.
one thing did catch her eye though. across the street and on the next block over, there was a small convenient store. rue mentally thanked herself for remembering to shove cash in her back pocket.
while walking towards the tiny store, she pondered what to buy. she had nothing she really wanted, only looking for an excuse to be inside the small shop she had never seen before.
after opening the glass door, the bell ringing softly, she walked inside. the man behind the tall counter gave her a small nod of greeting, which she returned.
she went over to look at the refrigerators, suddenly wanting a drink of sweetened tea.
the aisle over, a curly haired boy was examining all the candies he wished to devour.
harry had always been a fan of these late night outings. it let him have a bit of time to himself, and his thoughts.
he loved the idea of being alone for a while, although sometimes he wished he had a gentle soul to talk to.
finally picking the sour sweet candy he loved, sour patch kids, he decided to grab a drink as well.
when he walked over to the other side, he noticed a petite figure, standing, and looking for a beverage too.
she had dark brown hair, pulled back in a ponytail, with wavy ends, and skin that had a light tan from the summer sun.
she was wearing a pair of black jeans, much like himself, and a dark grey t-shirt. her feet were clad with navy blue flip-flops that looked slightly worn out.
rue had been searching for the exact flavor of tea she wanted for the past few minutes, only to grab an alternative.
she turned around to get a snack, when she noticed a tall boy staring at her.
he had a lean frame and was wearing black skinny jeans, much like herself, and his fit torso was hidden by a plain black t-shirt.
his feet were covered with a pair of brown boots, that had suede fading away from being worn so much, the leather showing.
