An hour or so later, I am getting tired and I realize a rather obvious problem I have.
Walking down the hallway, I call out Chay's name, trying to locate him.
"In the kitchen!" he replies.
Heading in the direction of his voice, I manage to find the kitchen he had showed me during the tour.
"Ah, there you are," he says as I enter the homey room used for cooking.
"Yeah, um, I hate to ask more of you, and it's late, but I don't have any possessions. At all. You know, because my apartment burned to the ground and there was nothing salvageable in the remains."
"Oh, right. Well, I guess I can take you shopping tomorrow. It's too late to do it now, considering it's after midnight. For now you can borrow some stuff."
Before I can cut in, Chay answers
my unasked question.
"My sister, Meredith, stays with me from time-to-time, so you can borrow some of her clothes." He squinted at me, cocking his head to the side. Then he smirked. "Yeah, you look about the same size. Short and scrawny," he teased.
I frown at him and slap his chest. Lightly, of course.
Of course, Chay overreacts and plays hurt. "Dang, woman! You're violent!"
"Shut up dumbass, we both know that didn't hurt," I say with a smirk of my own.
Rolling his eyes, Chay grabs my hand. "C'mon, I'll take you to Meri-Bear's room."
"Meri-Bear?" I question, a smile forming on my face.
"Don't laugh, it's a legitimate nickname!" Chay fires back.
"As legitimate as your dick!" I couldn't help it.
Chay looked wounded.
"That hurt, Durand. You never know what might really damage someone."
"I am done talking to you. Just show me your sister's room, Toti," I tell him.
"Fine, fine," he says, dragging me along by the arm.
••••
After I had changed into some of Meredith Toti's clothes, I decided to get some sleep. I crawl into the bed stiffly, feeling uncomfortable. I'm a person that loves routine, so this drastic change of surroundings wasn't exactly ideal for me. Sighing, I close my eyes. Sleep doesn't come easily, though. I feel like something bad is going to happen. I mean, my whole life right now is one big piece of bad luck. My thoughts drift to Chay. I can't help but wonder about the mysterious millionaire. It was odd, how he started telling me so much about himself, even though we had known each other for hardly three hours.
Flipping onto my right side, I reach over to the nightstand and pick up my phone.
'One missed call', it read.
I click on it, and find that it was from Matt. What the hell? Is this some kind of joke? He probably called me by accident. I sigh. I can't believe what I'm about to do. Pressing on his number, I call him back.
Ring, ring.
Ring, ring.
On the fifth ring, he picks up.
"Hello?"
His voice catches me off guard. I guess I am not ready to talk to him, after all.
"Is anyone there?" Matt's voice asks through the phone.
"Hi..." I say hesitantly.
"Court? Is that you? Courtney-"
"No, Matt. Not right now. Please. I-I'm not ready to talk about what happened. I just...never mind. I have to go. I'll...maybe I'll call you later."
"No, Courtney-" he starts.
"Bye," I whisper so quietly, he might not of heard me.
Then I hang up.
••••
The next morning was rough. I felt like a zombie, considering my lack of sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about Matt. He seemed apologetic, but I wasn't just going to forgive him like nothing happened between us. Like he didn't break my heart. Maybe I would be able to forgive him in the future, but now, hell, it's hardly been twelve hours. I wish I didn't miss him. I wish I didn't ache to have his arms around me. I wish I didn't want him back.
"Hey, Courtney? You up?"
Chay's voice pulled me back into reality.
"Yeah..." I reply.
"Woah. You look horrible."
My glare feels forced. I'm too tired to put any real feeling into it.
"Did you even sleep? You look even more exhausted than you did yesterday," Chay asks, sounding worried.
"I'm fine," I say, with what I hope is a reassuring smile.
It must've come out differently though, because Chay comes over and sits down on my bed.
"You can talk to me, Courtney."
"No Chay, I can't. You don't have the slightest idea what I'm going through. My life has never been easy, and now it's worse than ever. You have the perfect life, millions of dollars, and too many lovers to count. I bet you don't even know most of their names! Chay Toti, if you think I can talk to you about everything wrong in my life, than you are out of your fucking mind."
Chay stared at me, speechless. Completely speechless.
Oh god, what have I done...
"I'll go stay somewhere else. Sorry to inconvenience you. Really."
With that, I got up and walked out of the bedroom.
