college
A fresh start. For most people it's their first time living without their parents, having a roommate, basically living on their own.
At least that's what it's like for me. Today is the day I get on a plane and start my new life in college at University of Miami. Of course my Northern parents weren't too thrilled about my decision, that being that University of Miami is an overpriced private university that has a reputation for not giving much money and also the fact that it's a plane ride from my home.
When I told my parents about my interest in University of Miami, they pretty much laughed in my face. They said the dream was unrealistic, which I can understand. But, when University of Miami offered me pretty much a full scholarship based off of grades and soccer, my parents realized that maybe my dream wasn't really a dream after all. With my tuition being low, airfare wasn't a question anymore so University of Miami was my decision!
So here I am, standing in the airport clutching onto my oversized carryon and gripping the strap on my backpack tightly. I bite down on my bottom lip, watching the time go by as I wait to board. When my boarding group is called, I hurry over so I won't be the last one and then scurry onto the plane.
27F, 27F, 27F
I keep saying the number over and over again, hoping my seat will just magically appear in front of me. As I walk more towards the back I notice it and reach up into the overhead compartment, shifting my suitcase so it's at an angle that's not taking up much space.
I sit down in my seat, which luckily is the window seat, and go on my phone, waiting for the rest of my row to show.
When I start to think I'm going to have the whole row to myself I see a tall guy hovering in front of the row in the aisle, putting his bag into the same compartment mine is in.
Oh great. I got seated with a tall attractive guy. How much you wanna bet he's a douche bag?
He slides into the seat next to me with a smile and I return it.
Never mind. I take my bet back.
"Hi I'm Shawn." He says, fiddling with the earbud in his hand. I stare down at his hands for a second.
Why are his hands attractive? How the hell did that happen?
"Oh uh. I'm Emma." I say, blushing to the fact that I was clearly lost, staring at him.
"So what's binging you to Florida? I'm assuming it's the University of Miami pin on your backpack but correct me if I'm wrong." Shawn says with a grin. I look down to see what he's referring to and tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.
"Yea. I'm gonna be a freshman there." I smile and I see a twinkle in his eyes.
"Well that's something we have in common." He says and I furrow my brows together.
"Are you going to University of Miami?" I ask and he nods.
"It's my first year too. What are you studying?" He asks and I chuckle.
"Nursing. Specifically pediatric." I say.
"Wow, that's awesome. I'm going for music and business. And football but that's just a regular college thing. Do you play any sports?" He asks and I chuckle under my breath.
"Actually soccer is the only reason I'm even attending this school." I say and he gives me a look for further explanation. "I got recruited, full ride to here in sophomore year, along with other schools but Miami was my favorite." I smile and Shawn's face beams with astonishment.
