Jay's POV
"Alan! There is an assassin after Kris's life!" I don't exactly remember how I ended up in the Unova region, but I'd managed to find the beach villa Alan and Sam were renting. They didn't seem all too surprised with my arrival or my announcement. "Did you hear me?!"
"Yes, yes! We heard you!" Sam retorted sharply, preparing a picnic basket in the kitchen.
"And? You're not going to do or say anything about it?!" I whirled around to face Alan folding up a beach blanket and grabbing a large umbrella. Kris usually gets herself in trouble and no one bats an eye, but there generally isn't someone after her life! Why weren't they reacting properly!?
"Calm down, Jay." Alan put a hand on my shoulder and gave me a smile that was about as reassuring as an Aipom with a chainsaw. "Kris is going to be fine."
"How do you know that, Alan?! Huh?!" His smile fell with his hand off my shoulder- he didn't even have himself convinced she would be okay. "Yes, it's Kris we're talking about, but she's been acting different for a while now."
"And who's fault is that?!" Sam hollered from the kitchen, slamming the fridge shut and holding a half dozen apples in her arms. Unconsciously, I put Alan between me and her. Those apples had my forehead written all over them. She prepared a round, taking an apple from the bunch in her arm and grasping it in the fist resting at her other side. "Kris only goes completely stupid when you're around! She was doing fine on the trip until you had to go and kiss her!"
Alan gasped.
"Alan?" I was completely behind him now, so I popped my head over his shoulder. "I thought you already knew."
"What?" He tried craning his neck to look at me. "Of course I already knew."
"Then why did you gasp?" Ken's face appeared over Alan's other shoulder.
"Where the hell did you come from?!" Sam screeched and launched the apple at me, though she was yelling at Ken. It sailed through the air heading for Alan's nose, but careened around his face and smashed into the bridge of my nose sending me flying backwards while it bounced into Ken's outstretched hand.
"The Hoenn region," Ken spoke around a chunk of the apple he bit off.
Blood trickled down a nostril and I could feel the center of my face swelling up in an unattractive black and blue bruise.
"Come here, Jay. I want to slay you." A nasty grin playing at her lips as she stuffed apples in the picnic basket.
"What?!" Fumbling half way to my feet, then falling backwards on my hands, I started crawling to the nearest corner out of fright. "That's not how this friendship works!"
"It's exactly how this friendship works." Dropping the last apple in the basket, she stalked toward me. Ken sidestepped into my frame of vision, dragging Alan along to block Sam's path.
"Samantha," Ken said sternly. Jarred from the blood lust no doubt swimming behind her eyes, she refocused her wrath on Ken. Alan quickly flailed in front of him trying to soothe the oncoming storm with silly phrases like "He didn't mean it" and "It's just your name, dear." There was also a quickly cut off "sweetie" Sam growled at.
"Okay, okay! Quit the war path!" A girl with close cropped black hair and red streaks slid between the short distance left between Alan, Ken, and Sam. Her back was turned to me, but her voice and stature were familiar.
"Ripley?" Sam blinked and I scrambled to my feet.
"Rip?" I tried to stretch my neck to see the newcomer's face- I knew who it was of course, but it had been a while since I'd last seen my younger sister and she had dyed her hair (again) in that span of absence.
