Prologue
I got home from school after a stressful day of avoiding people. I tied up my hair and walked into the living room. I was surprised to see my parents there.
"Hey mum, dad." I greeted. They both looked at me with huge smiles. Feeling creeped out, I backed up slightly before announcing I was going to go upstairs.
"Wait! Autumn," my dad said, "get back here." I groaned and turned around. "Sit." What am I? A dog? I stared at them expectantly.
"Autumn," my mum sighed, "I know you're having a hard time right now-"
"Of course I'm having a hard time! I'm always being followed around and people are always cornering me!" I snapped. Everyday at school, I have to avoid people. Because of my mum, I'm always wearing girls' clothes. She wanted a daughter, but after having me she got into an accident and couldn't have anymore kids. She didn't want to adopt because she thinks it's too much of a hassle.
"Anyway, before I was so rudely interrupted." I rolled my eyes at her. "We're moving." I glared at my parents.
"What?"
"Yes. This weekend. We are moving and you will also be changing schools."
"Why? Why now?" They can't be serious. I've lived here my whole life. Well, people think my parents sent me to a boarding school and adopted a daughter, but still! They're just going to decide to move?!
"We think it'd be best if you didn't have to always avoid people. And we also want you to make a few friends." My dad explained. I stared at him blankly. So what if I didn't have friends at my current school? I don't need them. I have art, music, and books. They're far more entertaining than people.
"I wouldn't be in this situation if mum would just accept the fact that she has a gay son. I'm not a girl just because I'm gay!"
"Anyway, go start packing. We're moving furniture first." I shook my head and went to my room. Just as I got to my room, I got an idea. I shouldn't have to dress like a girl at my new school.
"Mum! Does this mean I can dress like a boy again?" I called down the stairs.
"No, you're still going to dress like a girl." What the fuck?! Why?!
We ended up moving. And tonight, we are going to the neighbors' house to have dinner. Kill. Me.
