Prologue

Thunderstorms are the perfect escape from teenage angst. Electricity crackles in the air, lightning ripping through the sky with ferocious speed. The thunder reverberates through your chest as you count the seconds between bright zigzags in the clouds and thunderous booms in the atmosphere.

Storms are natural, beautiful phenomena that can possibly cause great devastation to a population. Somehow, storms have always reminded me of the way love is.

It comes on strong, barreling through the heart and mind in a whirlwind of beauty and color, leaving the victim breathless and yearning for more. Weeks, months, years may even pass while the poor soul basks in the gloriousness of what is inevitably a fleeting moment, too absorbed in the excitement and electricity to notice as the other person, the subject of the victim's love, slowly fades away. The electric atmosphere becomes more and more platonic, the once thunderous booms of her heartbeat softening to small blips on his radar. The relationship between his clouds and her sky crumble as he breaks apart within her grasp.

She gasps for air as the rain begins to fall.

Great drops well in her eyes, the same bright blue orbs he said looked like the clearest of skies, now clouded over like the air after a storm.

Questions swirl through her mind, debris in the storm drain of her life, spinning in whirlpools of confusion and anger.

Why?

The one question that will never be answered, trembling on her lips as a fragile glass drop, yearning to be smashed to a million pieces, as she feels her heart has just been.

love.

A stupid, hopeless emotion, the one thing that may be able to ruin the entirety of the human race. Ripping us apart one by one as marriages crumble in rampant earthquakes of drug abuse and adultery, families torn to shreds by constant arguing over deep trenches of debt.

But yet

love is the one thing we as humans yearn for. Some argue it may be our one purpose here. This disorienting emotion,  causing pain and sadness, causes what can only be explained as the most amazing spectrum of feelings in the heart and mind.
