CH 1 : Unexpected

Shit", I muttered as I glanced at the line in front of me.

There must have been at least six people before me who were waiting to have their order taken. I cursed under my breath and rushed to join the queue, smiling apologetically at the old lady who was just about to become the seventh person before i could finally order.

I wasn't  usually this bad of a New Yorker. In fact i try to give someone elderly my seat in the subway or let the kid have the donut with the extra sprinkles, but today just wasn't one of those days. Today i was running terribly late. I stayed up till 3 in the morning, courtesy of my job and woke up half an hour later than when i normally do. I rushed to have a bath and change and currently  was in the coffee shop near my apartment, wishing this line would move faster so that i can grab a bite to eat and get going already. God i was so dead.

I was glancing at the wall clock every 3 seconds and then back at the line to check how many more goddamned people remained now before i could put something in this grumbling stomach of mine. Just then my cellphone started vibrating in the pocket of my pants and i took it out. Glancing at the screen i quickly picked it up.

"Don't tell me that Mr Lazyass is already there," I asked.

"No he isn't. Well not yet anyways. Where ARE you?" Kad almost screamed.

"I overslept okay? Don't yell like I'm still in high school and the teacher is about to walk in for first period. I'm just getting something to eat and then I'll be there in no time," I reassured her.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" Kad snorted. "You do know that it's rush hour right? How will you even get a cab at this time?"

"Can you please just stop with all the negatively?" I sighed.

"You know how much i hate it when I'm late. I'll try and be there as soon as possible, Kad. You know i will."

"I know, i know. I just don't like it when Mr Wannabe here comes in and smirks when he sees that he beat you here," She said.

I scoff. "Yeah right. I make it on time every single day. Just because he came in early like maybe thrice in all the years he has worked there doesn't mean that he is an oh-so-amazing employee. He just thinks that because he's desperate to get Fremby's attention. When will he finally realize that for the boss to notice you you actually have to work hard and not try and downplay others?" I raised an eyebrow even though she couldn't see me.

The line just had two more people in front of me. One of them was speaking her order at the counter and the other guy, all clad up in a suit, was staring back at me with accusing eyes. Don't tell me that he was just like our Lazyass here. Wow. Who would've thought that i would've seen another one of him out here?!

I gave him a what look and he turned away.

"I don't even know if he'll learn that. Wait a second, did you finish planning the idea of the party that Bloombergs will be throwing?" she inquired.

"You know me too well," I admitted.

"But we still have days left to give them our final idea", she whined.

"You know I like to do things early Kad. I just cant handle the last minute situation stress," I said

.

"This is still a bit too early but. Don't tell me that this is because of Danny now," she said. She had the I'm-sure-this-isn't-what-really-happened-voice on and I knew that I'll have to own up to it sooner or later and i love to do things sooner rather than pushing them off but the brother of Mr Lazyass was turning away to walk with his order in his hand and giving me the stink eye again., which meant that I actually had to tell her about it later.

I sighed and replied a quick,"I have to order now. I'll meet you soon," before shutting off my phone and putting it back in my pocket.

I went up to the counter and smiled at the girl standing behind it. “Hi can I get a grande café mocha and a pretzel?”

“I’m really sorry but we are out of pretzels. Would you like me to get you anything else in its place?” she asked me.

I got very upset because I really wanted something solid to eat and I love pretzels but today just isn’t my day is it? I tried to smile at the girl and said, “No it’s okay, Carla,” I read off the name that was printed on her name tag. “Just get me a café mocha then. Grande.”

She nods and turns around to make one. I rarely have breakfast like this, rushing up to a diner or a hot dog cart or anything of that sort, ordering something and then again rushing off to catch a cab and eat on my way to my office. I love to make some breakfast at home and sometimes Danny made me breakfast in bed. Oh how I hate myself for not appreciating those gestures. If only I knew that one day I’d have to wake up and he wouldn’t be in my life anymore. If only.

Carla comes up with my espresso and hands it to me. She quickly prints up my bill and I gave her the money I had already taken out of my wallet and was clutching in my hands. I turn and quickly rush out of the coffee place.

I heaved a sigh. It was great to be outside again. I love Fall. This time of year everything is full of energy. All the leaves from the trees fall on the ground and everyone is bustling with enthusiasm. No ice cold water. No almost corpse like people walking at a slow pace. Fall was a time to have fun.

I ran up to the end of the sidewalk and rose up my hand when I saw a cab coming my way. “Taxi,” I screamed. But it did not stop, going just as it was before. I stood there for hardly half a minute when I saw another one coming. I again repeated the process but again the taxi speeds away. Ughh. I hate rush hour!

Just then my phone started to vibrate again. I quickly took it out of my pocket and swiped the screen to answer it.

“What now Kad?” I said, exasperated.

“I know you are already running late but can you please get me a chicken wrap? I thought I could survive without breakfast today but I’m already starving,” she said quickly.

“Might as well. Every cab is occupied right now. See you as soon as my shitty day turns up a bit. I hope,” I said and ended the call, only to rush up inside again

.

This time there were only 2 people before me. Damn it. So this meant that almost every single person was either in their offices or in a cab going to their offices. I was so late.

The time passed away quickly this time around and I was again at the counter, ordering up Kad’s chicken wrap. And as it turns out they had that and not my pretzel! I officially did not like this day.

As soon as I had paid, I took up my half drunk espresso in one hand and the wrap in another, trying to push my bag towards my back, so that it did not bump into my right leg every time I took a step forward.

As I pushed out of the coffee place, I looked down at my coffee and tried to make sure that it stayed put and did not slip out of my hands.

While I was busy doing that I bumped into someone in front of me and my left hand, which was holding the coffee, collided into a hard chest, causing the coffee cup to give way and spill all over the t-shirt of the guy in front of me. My left hand was always the weak one.

“Shit. I am so, so sorry. I didn’t see and--,” I spoke but was cut off by the person in front of me.

“it’s okay, “the guy said in a deep voice.

“I really am sorry. If you want I can—“ I stopped in midsentence when I glanced up at the person (yes I was too horrified to do that before).

Why did my mouth open up wide like I was trying to eat a huge hamburger in one go you ask?

Because the person standing in front of me was none other than Ian Somerhalder.
