In The Light of the Headlights

The Beginning of the End

After a long day at work, I needed to relax. I went to the bar at bought myself two cold beers before driving up north to visit my parents. They needed someone in good health to take care of them somewhat regularly. 

I was on a road without much light which was surrounded by forest, it was the road I normally took. I turned on the radio to change the eery atmosphere which seemed to be here on this road all the time at night. The local talkshow was on however the host was talking about recent sitings of strange creatures in the forest. One of the men on the show said: "Oh, have you already heard about the creature? It's reported to be twice the size of a wolf with glowing eyes and fur." 

All of a sudden, the radio cut out and all I heard was static. I told myself that these people were talking nonsense. It's ridiculous to have a creature with that description in the forest. I continued to drive until I heard a big thud. My car stopped, I hit something. I exited my vehicle and walked to the front. There I saw a trail of blood, leading me to the forest on the side of the street. Shivers passed the length of my spine, I looked at the forest and looked back. I noticed that there was green fur on the grill of my car. I wondered where the animal that I hit went. I started to get a little scared so to reassure myself that I was alone I followed the trail and peeked into the forest. I wanted to see if what I hit was still here. I started to walk when I thought to have seen a large figure walk by me. I hesitated, took a breath and continued to walk until I saw four yellow eyes that were watching me. I closed my eyes, rubbed them and when I opened them they weren't there. Creeped, I walked back to my car and heard a deep, raspy grunt behind me.  Without hesitation, I sprinted the fastest I could towards my car not looking back at all. I got to my car, opened the door and sat down. I was all alone in my car and I began to breathe calmly. Suddenly, the radio turned on again and I let out a scream, realizing it was just the radio I laughed at how ridiculous everything was. I concluded that the yellow eyes were probably owls and the grunt was the wind. However the green fur still bothered me. I was anxious and scared sitting still in my car next to the forest so I decided to forget all of this and move on. I started the car, heard the motor start and saw the lights turn on. In the lights of my headlights I saw a green tail pass before me, just barely seeing it towards the right end of the car. I realized that this was the creature the men on the radio were talking about. I pushed on the accelerator as fast as I could. I checked the rearview mirror to see if I was getting away fast enough except the four eyes didn't seem to be getting farther from me.
