From the small amount of research I've done it is a medical term that means a shared psychosis. This is psychiatric syndrome that are transmitted from one person to another. There can be more than two people that share the same syndrome (folie à trois, folie à quatre, folie en famille (family madness), or folie à plusieurs(madness of several).
The symptoms are: delusional beliefs and hallucinations are possible.
