*first time writing Blinky straight we'll see how it goes XD*
The trolls poured into the camp, sweat stained and bloody, jittery with fading adrenaline. Blinky was dashing among them, directing each troll to either medical or the camp center to get settled. "Where is your leader?" One last female troll staggered into camp, and Blinky spoke to her in a soft but urgent tone, guiding her to sit down while he looked at her numerous injuries. "I am she." The historian blinked, surprised, but quickly recovered. "Ah, so you are Kamara! My apologies." Kamara smiled weakly. "Don't be sorry. I should be the one apologizing, for imposing myself on your hospitality." Blinky shook his head. "No, no. You need to rest. Do not be afraid to ask for whatever you may require."
Blinky soon left to assess the situation in the medical section, and Kamara watched him go with a gleam in her eye. When Claire sat down Kamara turned to her, grinning mischievously. "He's quite handsome, don't you think?" She laughed at Claire's started expression. "Tell me, does he have a mate?" Claire shook her head. "Well in that case, I might actually have a little fun in exile." She wiggled her eyebrows and Claire asked, "Not to rain on your parade or anything but you literally just met him, how are you interested already?"
Kamara leaned forward. "Wanna know a secret? I knew Blinky when we were children. He doesn't remember that of course, but we have been writing letters for some time- both of us were training to become leaders, and Vendel and my own teacher thought we should keep in touch. We were supposed to meet personally in a big official thing eventually, when the elders all decided to pass on their power to the next generation, but obviously that was interrupted. They're all dead, scattered, disorganized- except Blinkous and I. Expect to see many more refugees in the days ahead."
Eyes trained on Blinky's back, Kamara continued to talk. "I'm an optimist. If I can have a little fun before Gunmar kills us all I might as well take the chance. Such a brain, but if I had known he had the looks to match I would have visited much sooner."
Blinky was counting bandage rolls when he felt a warm hand gently touch his shoulder. Startled, Blinky tried to turn but tripped, falling and knocking over a shelf of supplies. "Sorry, are you alright? I didn't know you were skittish." Blinky stood and brushed himself off, feeling inexplicably nervous. "I'm not. I just. Um. Was... concentrating." Kamara grinned rakishly and Blinky's chest felt tight.
Excusing himself, Blinky tried to calm down and assess what could be wrong with him. The problem seemed to focus on Kamara: true, she was quite beautiful, but Blinky hadn't felt romantic interest in centuries.
But now he found himself thinking of this new troll: her lilac skin, perfect curves, delicate silvery horns, four slender hands, eyes like violets... Blinky shook himself and threw himself back into his work, telling himself that this was no time for romance. However, every time he managed to get himself back on track, Kamara would appear with some excuse- helping with organizing, attack plans, food concerns- but her very presence took Blinky's breath away every time.
A few weeks later Blinky was headed to a quick meeting with friends, reluctantly parting from Kamara at the door. "Are you sure you can't sit with m- us? There's always room for one more." Kamara smiled ruefully and crooned, "You know I can't you silly Galadrigal. There's a million things I need to do before bed. Have fun, I'll see you in the morning." She quickly leaned forward and nuzzled Blinky on the cheek, then darted away with a little wave.
Shocked, Blinky waved back with a dopey grin on his face. He remembered what he was supposed to be doing just as Toby's long wolf-whistle split, making Blinky's face darken in an embarrassed blush. "Getting some action man, good going!" Aargh grinned and waggled his eyebrows dorkily. "Blinky's got a girlfriend! Blinky's got a girlfriend!" Toby sang, subsiding with a giddy look when Blinky tried to silence him through a look. "Kamara is not my girlfriend. She is the respected leader of my tribe and I happen to enjoy her friendly company, that's all. Besides, it's not the time to form a new relationship anyway, being at war."
Claire snorted from her position leaning against Jim, an arm over his shoulder. "It's the best time- you never know if you'll get another chance, so why not go for it?" Blinky opened his mouth to object and Claire added, "Just consider this. If we weren't at war, would you date Kamara?" With almost no hesitation Blinky said, "Yes." But then he frowned and thought about it. "But she might not be interested in me."
Toby almost choked in disbelief. "You're kidding right? She troll kissed you!" Blinky fidgeted. "She could just be acting friendly..." Claire shook her head, amazed at how oblivious her male friends could all be. "She's always going on about how attractive she finds you, and she likes that you read a lot. In particular she says you have nice hair, a refined voice, and, er, a nice butt." Claire said this last part with an awkward cough. "She likes my hair?" Blinky seemed fascinated by this, and the butt comment was stowed away for later thought.
"Well... maybe I can give it a chance." Blinky conceded, earning cheers from his assembled friends. Toby, Claire, and Jim all high fived their troll dad, and Aargh patted his shoulder over their heads.
