"Ruben!", I called, waving at the mop of red hair drowing in the crowd.
"Nat!", he yelled back, his voice muffled by the pile of books and binders he was carrying.
I finaly caught sight of his frowning freckled face as shoved past a girl that was texting in the middle of the hallway. She let out a small squeal as she stumbled into her other texting friend.
"Why so glum?", I asked as we fell into step, side by side. His little legs had to take two steps for every one I took so I made sure to slow down.
He huffed and adjusted the books in his small skinny arms.
"I got someone's hair in my mouth.", he grumbled.
I bit my lip to supress a laugh at how honestly disgruntled he looked.
"I'm sure it sucks more for the person that has your slober all over their head.", I said, trying to be optimistic.
"Yeah, whatever.", he answered, though I smiled when I saw his expression relax slightly. I loved how I could affect him that easily. "Its not my fault I'm short."
"Stop whining, its not that bad. You can still get free cookies at Loblaws."
"Easy for you to say, your freakishly tall."
"I'm just that awesome."
I grinned as he rolled his eyes and tried to speed up. I easily caught up with him.
"See what I mean!", he complained, waving his arms around. In the process of explaining why it sucked to be small, he seemed to forget about the books he was holding. That's how they ended up scattered all over the hallway.
"Ruben! You idiot!"
"Now you're just being mean.", he muttered as he bent down and started picking up his things.
I set my notebooks to the side gently and got down to my knees to help. As soon as we had gathered everything into a neat little pile, he grabbed them and stormed off.
"Did I do something?", I yelled after him.
He didn't answer, but I swear I could see those freckled brown eye roll.
"You know you can't ignore me forever Ruben, I'm your best friend!"
He stopped for a second, turning his head a fraction.
"I can try!", he called back.
And with that he continued to march away, his little hips swaying lightly side to side and his arms bareley circling the items hugged to his chest.
I smirked to myself.
This wouldn't last until lunch.
