MAYA’S P.O.V.
“You’re home late,” I heard my dad say as he walked out of the kitchen and into the foyer. I had just stepped inside, trying to be as quiet as possible so that I didn’t wake my parents up.
“I didn’t know you were still up,” I mumbled as I closed the door behind me and started for the stairs.
“Where did you get all that?” my dad asked as I reached the bottom step.
“Oh, I got a ride home from this guy in my grade and we went to 7-11,” I tried to reply casually. “It’s just lemonade.”
“Just lemonade?” my dad questioned.
“Dad,” I groaned as he held his hand out for the cup. I begrudgingly handed it to him and he took a small sip and handed it back.
“Get to bed young lady,” he said and I rolled my eyes as I walked up to my bedroom.
The only reason he did that was because one night over the summer I came home drunk from a party and ever since then my parents stopped trusting me. They grounded me for the rest of the summer and tonight’s party was the first one I’d been to in a while.
I walked into my room and turned the lights on after shutting the door behind me. I changed into my pajamas and crawled into bed, pulling out the John Green book that I’d started a couple days ago and was now halfway finished with. I ate one of my chocolate bars as I got lost in the story for a little while and actually fell asleep in the middle of one of the sentences. My favorite way to fall asleep.
The next morning, my mom came in to wake me up the way she usually did, turning all my lights on and then kissing my cheek a couple times. I grumbled in response and she patted my side as she left my room, telling me that I had to get up soon for school.
I wasn’t used to getting up this early since over the summer the earliest I’d wake up was around three o’ clock which is when my school day ended. I drifted in and out of sleep for another twenty minutes before I finally pulled myself out of bed and over to my dresser to find something to wear. I pulled out a light blue maxi skirt and a white tight crop top that showed a small sliver of my stomach when paired together. I slipped my sandals on my feet and went to go brush my teeth and wash my face before I went downstairs.
“I heard you were with a boy last night,” was the first thing my mom said to me when I entered the kitchen.
“He just drove me home,” I mumbled.
“And he bought you candy and a drink?” my mom asked. “That was nice of him.”
“Yeah, it was,” I agreed as I sat down at the counter.
“You should be hanging around more people like that,” my mom told me in her typical motherly way. “I’m still not sure about your friends…”
“I’m happy with my friends,” I retaliated. “I don’t need you to tell me who I should and shouldn’t be friends with.”
“Excuse me young lady,” she scolded.
“Maya, you don’t talk to your mother like that,” my dad growled.
