Hi first story ever. Enjoy.

As I lay awake in my sleeping bag on the cold stone floor waiting for the sun to come up I can't help but feel impatient for the night to end so we can begin our work. I don't like not having anything to do, it leaves me with to much time to think, and again I can not sleep so I am stuck with my thoughts.

Which leaves me to think about my confrontation with James.

Flash back

"Maddy can we talk for a sec"

Oh crap, what have I done now? 'umm ok'

He pulled me over to the edge of our small cave, away from the noise kids fighting over food and away from my friends prying eyes.

'what can I do for you' was all I could think of because he wasn't saying anything and hadn't let go of my arm yet. It was starting to get uncomfortably silent so I looked up at him 'James what is it that you wanted to talk to me about just spit it out, is it about my chores, because I know I've been slaking off a bit I'm just getting tired with looking after the kids and all'

"No, no that's not it" he finally said "you have been working hard, I've seen you I know the extra work load is hard on everyone I'm not worried about that"

'then wha' he leaned down and kissed me interrupting my sentence. I pushed against his chest to get him away from me and turned my head to look away.

He put his hand on my shoulders and leaned away "what, was it not good"

'no, it's just I don't think this is right'

"why? Look Maddy I've liked you since I first laid eyes on you at that abandoned shop and lately well now that we're the oldest kids here we should set an example, you know"

'what do you mean set an example, just because we maybe the only humans left doesn't mean we have to hook up or anything'

"come on" he said will rubbing my shoulders "don't be like that I'm not just doing this for the group but because I genuinely like you. Haven't you seen the way I am around you it's like I can relax, don't you like me at all" he leaned in for another kiss this time holding my shoulders so I wouldn't move. I turned my head.

'look James it's not that I don't like you. You're a great leader and I look up to you in that way but'

"You do, but you don't love me. You can learn to love me, we have a lot of time on our hands and I know I'm older then you but I can wait. Please consider me I'm strong I can protect you, with you by my side we could look after our little tribe together" I couldn't speak he really does like me what do I do "look at me Madelyn, won't you at least think about it, no presser like I said we have lots of time, but I won't give up so expect us to talk about this again." With that he released my shoulders gave me one more peck and said "so are you hungry" I just nodded and he took my hand and lead me back to the table.

End of flash back

Oh why can't we just be friends again this is so weird every time I see him now it's going to be awkward. What should I say to him when we see each other next? I mean I can't avoid him he's our leader we work together every day to feed and protect our group. We are always with each other, weather its hunting, cooking or running after kids we are a team that is devoted to our family's survival. In case you're wondering we are a small group of human's maybe the last and James being the oldest at 20 has taken on the role of being our leader while Kate and I are both 17 and are sharing the role of mothering those younger. Then we have the triplets Robert who is 15 and then Tim and Sarnia are both 16, their not really triplets their just so close we couldn't separate them for an hour. And the next oldest John who's 14, he hovers over his younger brother Sean who's 7 like a shadow, always read to jump in front of him when there's danger. There are also 8 other younger children with ages ranging from 11 to 2. Now you might be wondering why no adults well it's been like this for weeks now, you see we where attacked be mutant wolves, and well our parents fought to protect us, letting us, their children flee during the battle. They didn't return but I plan to go back and see what remains of our old camp when I can get away. James says not to delude ourselves in thinking they are still alive, because we all know no one ever survives the wolves. We've all heard the stories the man that hunt telling, they've found entire camps of human skeletons and corpses. They say 'it's not in the nature of wolves to show mercy.'
