Part 6

I woke up at dawn this morning. It was very early and everyone was still sleeping. I didn't want to sleep so I decided to go for a walk. I got out of my hammock and headed to the woods.

I went to the tree where I had spent my first night and climbed it. The view was amazing. Even better than when I first got here because the sun was rising and the sky was colored in several shades of pink.

I was just watching the sun when I heard a really loud sound. At first,  I thought it was an earthquake so I got scared. I saw some guys standing next to the wall and suddenly that wall started moving. Right after that, they ran out of the opening in that wall

It was only then when I really thought about what could be behind these walls.

I climbed down the tree and headed to the place where the wall had opened. I stood in front of the opening. It kind of looked like a maze. I saw long tunnels and all the walls were covered in ivy just like the walls in the Glade.

It was so inviting and I really wanted to go in and look around there but then I remembered what Newt had told me about the rules of the Glade - only runners can go in the Maze. But with what were runners so special? Why only they could go in the Maze?   I thought about it for a few moments and then decided that I can go in and look around a little bit. I won't go anywhere far anyway.

As I was going to step in someone took me by my hand. I almost screamed because I hadn't heard the person approach. I turned to see Newt standing in front of me.

"Where you think you're going?" he asked me.

I blushed a little bit, "Well, I was just... um... passing by and... um... I just wanted to look and see what's in there."

"You know that you aren't allowed to go there, don't you?"

I laughed nervously. "I wasn't going to go far. I just wanted to look around. What could happen, anyway?"

"First, you can get lost in the maze, second, you can meet a griever and he can kill you and, third, you can get punished by going out there." He almost sounded angry.

"But why can runners go out there? It can happen to them as well."

"Listen, Elle, runners are the best of the best. They go out there every day, run every day and know the maze but you, for example, don't know anything."

"You really think I don't know anything? I know a lot. For example I..."

He cut me off. "You don't know anything. Do you know that the maze changes every night? Do you know what a griever is? Have you even noticed that the openings close every night and open every morning?

I looked at the ground and answered quietly. "No."

"You see? You don't know anything about the place. Usually, greenies ask a lot of questions about the Glade or the Maze. But you... It looks like you don't care about anything or anyone but yourself. You..."

"Okay, okay. Stop it! I understood what you meant. Just stop yelling at me." I felt a tear run down my cheek as I said that.

"Are you crying?" He lifted my chin up. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to..."

I quickly slammed his hand away and said in an angry voice. "I'm not crying.  Something fell into my eye."

"Elle, I..."

"Tell me more about the Glade! What is a griever?"

I could see the sadness in his face while he said. "Uh... um... well, a griever is half an animal and half a mechanical creature that usually comes out at night. It lives in a maze and he probably is the main reason why these openings close every night. But sometimes he comes out at the day as well and attacks the runners. Some of the runners don't make it out and that's why we won't let any glader go into the maze. It's just for your safety."
