chapter 1 - ghost

keith stood in the stands, watching. he could see allura thanking the flock of people that came to say their farewells to lance.

he's been there for a while, amidst the sea of black suits, watching. he didn't even notice it had started to rain.

i didnt think it could rain in the balmera, keith thought. allura thought it would be best for lance's final resting place to be in the balmera because it would protect him. pidge had insisted he be returned to earth, but allura thought it too dangerous, and besides, lance loved the balmera. its like a big warm mom, but like, its as a big as a planet !! he had said. it had been a long and quiet ride from arus to balmera without lance's quips and narcissistic comments to entertain the team.

...lance.

why should i care? he thought. surely, he ought to be glad. lance was nothing but a nuisance to him.

and yet, he felt a void. a hollow empty space, once filled with... lance?

lance.

all the goofy smiles, the horrible pick up lines, his excessive flirtatiousness... gone.

hunk was on a podium, reading lance's eulogy.

"...but despite his cocky narcissistic attitude, lance genuinely cared for people more than himself. he died saving our helmsman coran, and he'll forever be in our hearts..."

keith picked up a small piece or balmeran crystal lying on the ground. a gust of wind blew on keith's hair, making it fly all around. he had half expected a snarky comment from lance, then realised no one would comment on his mullet again. teats finally welled up in his eyes. he always had cared about lance. he just never knew what it was, and lance was always busy making a fool out of himself anyway.

"UGH!" keith threw the crystal to the floor. he missed lance, no matter how hard if was to admit to himself.

the team headed back to the ship. they all attempted at conversation, but without lance to lighten the mood, they all left to their separate rooms. keith hung up his red jacket and as soon as he turned around, a very smug lance with his trademark smirk™ on his face was sitting on his bed.
