EMMA'S POINT OF VIEW
I skip out of my light-charcoal-colored Jeep holding a cardboard box filled with my shirts. I huff in a breath of crisp October air and gaze in awe at me and Holland's new apartment. I hold back a squeal as I take in the building's features. It is covered in chocolate-colored bricks and dust from old age. It looked kind of small but it was perfect to me.
I look over to my best friend Holland McChicken, who surprisingly never got harassed because of her last name, and she has the same 'Holy-cow-this-apartment-is-perfect' look on her face as I did a couple seconds ago. We both just graduated from a University in North Dakota. Holland majored in biology and I majored in art and forensic sciences. We have grown up in the same town and have been inseparable since preschool.
For the first time in our lives we are unsure of what is ahead of us. And we can't wait to start another chapter of our lives in this apartment.
I look back at Holland (who has the energetic attitude and the mentality of your average 6 year old) and she immediately glances over to me and yells at little to loudly, "Race ya inside, Emma!"
Holland quickly scrambles to the door holding a box of books. I close the door of the Jeep (that we rented to get to our apartment), grab my handbag and get a better grip on the box of shirts. I run to the door, a little slower than Holland and hand her the key to the house. She unlocks the door and half gasps.
The building was already furnished and the walls were laser white, the floor was a field of spotless oak. The door opened up into the living room but it seemed to be mixed with a dining room and a kitchen. The apartment had two bed rooms and one bathroom on the other end. It sounds small and it looks small from the outside, but it was huge.
I turned to Holland and we both said almost in sync "I love it!" I gave her a quick, awkward half hug and slightly smiled. I ran my hand through my thick, dark curls quietly sighed.
"So what first" I asked Holland.
"I don't know but I can totally go for a ham sandwich, but the fridge is empty." Holland almost pouted.
I hand her a twenty dollar bill and said, "Okay here's a twenty, go get yourself a sandwich and be sure to get bottled water and some hot pockets on the way home so we can survive this week!" Her face lit up as she pocketed the money.
"Thanks, Emma! See you later!" Holland loudly says on the way out.
"Okay, bye!" I say to her, but its too late she, slams the door half way in to the word 'okay'.
I take that time to unpack my clothes, movies and books. After I did that I decided to call my mom. I pick up a mint green cord phone that was on a sleek black coffee table in the living/dining/kitchen room and dial my mom's number. She picks up on the third ring.
"Hello?" My mom sounds almost clueless.
"Hey mum." I say as I pick up a flower themed calendar and hang it besides the bookshelf. I set it up to October, today is the 28th. It has a picture of a deep orange Poppy on it.
"How's the new apartment." She says sounding out each syllable of the word 'apartment' very slowly.
"Oh it's great. I can only think of one flaw which is that it has a big red stain on the floor that I can't get out. I guess the last owners were really messy eaters." I say in an unsure tone. My mom laughs a little to loud to sound genuine.
"Okay that's good, but I'm actually in the middle of something right now so... II'll call you later this week," she drifts off in to her other task.
"Okay bye. Love you!" I quickly exclaim.
"Love you too, have a nice night!" she hangs up right after.
I go to sit down on the tan recliner for some deserved relaxing time but as soon as I sit Holland barges through the door. Her sand-colored curls were soaked with rain water. Holland struggled to close the door with her foot and juggled the two bags of water and hot pockets.
"Hey Hol, why the sad face?" I say getting up to help her with carry bags.
"Okay let me tell you the story, so first I dropped my coolatta on my shoes and they wouldn't get me another one, then it suddenly started to downpour on me and literally, I kid you not, a bolt of lightning went off right in front of me, next some creepy old lady at the grocery store came up to me, patted my shoulder and said 'don't worry you'll go first' about four times. I don't know maybe it's just not my day Em" Holland looks down and plays with her thumbs.
I stared in to her baby blue eyes, that could be tiny, circular models of a crystal clear sky.
"I guess so Hol. Hey do you want to make popcorn and watch The Little Mermaid?" I offer.
"Of course! I'm always up for popcorn and mermaids!" Hol's mood immediately brightens. I can almost see a golden sun above her head illuminating her thoughts and actions.
"Okay you can go make the popcorn, while I set up the movie?" I tell her, as I head to the television.
"Sounds good! Thank you!" she goes to make the popcorn.
I plop on to the couch, it feels like a cloud. I really needed to chill and watch a movie after spending the whole day traveling. Seconds after the intro started playing on The Little Mermaid, Hol came in with two bowls of popcorn. The aroma of the buttery popcorn slithered into my nose like a snake.
"Thank you, Holland this smells so good!" I excitedly said as I grabbed my bowl of popcorn as if it were my child.
"You're welcome, anytime Em." She mumbles with a mouthful of popcorn.I grin widely.
About Half way in to when Sebastian is singing 'Under the Sea', a bolt of lightning struck the apartment and it started to, quite viciously I might add, shake the house. Then the power went out and a door in the back of the house slammed and echoed loudly through out the whole apartment. After a minute or so I broke the silence and said, "Um I guess this is a sign we should go to sleep." Holland let out a small little "Mhm" and nodded.
"Night!" I said as I got up to go brush my teeth and wash my face.
After I did that I listened to music on my iphone, mostly really slow songs for a couple minutes before falling
asleep.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I see fast motions. I can't really get a full image of what I'm seeing. I pick up a picture a girl who seems to be about twelve. She has green eyes, I think and medium height hair that is dark brown and in cute little pigtails. She's chanting something, but I can only pick up that it started with an M and is wearing a yellow dress that looks like it was meant for babies. I also see flashes of red. I feel frightened and uncomfortable.
----------------------------------------------------------
Light floods in to my vision. Light? I thought the power went out? Once my eyes adjusted I realized that they were wet. I must have been crying. I also see Holland at the door holding a flashlight at my face. It feels like laser beams, especially because I just woke up. I check my battery powered clock an it reads 3:46am.
"Hey Hol, what happened" I say groggily.
"You were screaming about like a..." she struggles to find the correct words.
"A Mofa?" she still looks unsure. All of a sudden it all hit me and the words were loud and clear in my mind. There was a moment of silence until I knew it.
"A Mooface"
