~Aiden~I'm in the boy's locker room, changing into my PE clothes. The day is hot and the sky is clear. Today has already broken the record for the highest heat wave in over fifteen years. The heat invades the school like a plague, finding everyone. Outside is hotter than in here, so I take my time in changing. That is, until Jonah comes in.
He's nineteen going on twenty and is the student Phys. Ed teacher. He graduated two years ago. His body is built like a football player, which is what he was on his Senior Year; back when he was a part of the six man entourage that followed Kaleb Owens, the step son of the town's mayor. I don't like him much, not since he beat up my brother the week after grad. His short, curly blond hair and mysterious grey/blue eyes make anyone uncomfortable, so he makes himself untouchable. I think even a few teachers are intimidated by him.
"What's up, Aiden," Jonah spits out my name. I'm not his favourite in the class. I nod my head at him, finish changing, and leave the locker room as quickly as possible. The other guys come rushing into the locker room, pushing past me and knocking me into the wall. Once they all walk down the hallway to the actual room, I shake my head and say under my breath; "What am I? Invisible."I open the door into the gym and take a deep breath of air conditioned air, closing my eyes and imagining how much better today would be without the hot sun. I'm starting to sweat already. In five minutes, the rest of the guys come running out wearing their gym clothes too. The teacher, Mr. Hall, comes out to meet us in the gym; holding a pen and time sheet. That means one thing, and one thing only. We're going for a run.
Out of a class of twenty four, I'm the only one who groans of complaint. Someone tries to hide a laugh at me, but it escaped his mouth anyway. I try to not pay him any attention. "Now I know it's boiling today, but I'm away tomorrow so the run is moved to today," says Mr. Hall, looking at me and then scanning the crowd of boys. "Just do your best, and when you're all back, how about a game of dodge-ball?"
Everyone hoots and hollers at the mention of everyone's favourite game, and fists go flying in the air. Even I join in on the chants for the game. This really motivated us to do well on the run. Hall claps his hands and then makes a motion with his hands to the door. Everyone goes running in a straight line for the door, and at first I'm iffy to go right away because I'm afraid the teacher will slap our butts as we run just like he used to for football last year; but he doesn't, so I head in the group somewhere in the middle.
Darian, who's always the last to finish a run exits the gym last. Once the jock of the class, Aaron Brooks, reaches the large green field, Mr. Hall cups his hands and shouts out to us "and if you can beat me on the run, you can get treats next class!" At that, the teacher leaves the gym and starts running after us; and everyone runs harder than they have before, except for me. Darian and the pot-smoker, Keaton, are passed immediately. There's about six between Hall and I. They all try sprinting to finish the run, which is a bad mistake because we haven't left the field yet, and there's about three kilometres left in the run from off school grounds and they will lose their breath before they hit even one kilometre.
The sun is high in the sky, setting fire to my skin in the late afternoon. Sweat is forming even faster now. I don't find that a good thing since the girls are out on the field playing soccer. If they see me sweating already, they'll think I'm in bad shape and find me unattractive. Well, all of them except for my friend Simone. She knows I get hot real easy.
Her teacher, Ms. Pabst, yells an order of defense to the team opposite of Simone, and the other team of girls win the ball and start running away. I shake my head, getting a feeling that Pabst is taking sides on her students.
