"Your pancakes are fluffy."

Tiffany skidded to a halt on the tiled floors, almost spilling the coffee from the pot she had been holding the whole night. She backpedaled towards the lone girl occupying the middle booth, a bit taken a back at how she was looking up at her with all the seriousness in the world.

"Excuse me?" Tiffany asked, suddenly unsure. She couldn't remember serving her earlier.

"Pancakes," the girl pointed at the stack of half-eaten pancakes on the table, swimming in cinnamon-flavored syrup. "Fluffy," she ended, looking incredibly stoic and emotionless, it made Tiffany's eyebrows furrow.

She could only stare at the girl who was looking back at her with a blank gaze.

Usually, Tiffany loathed the after dark shifts, because as much as she liked being paid for doing nothing majority of the night, the rare number of people she did have to serve were either drunk or wasted–roaming the sleeping city like zombies, scouring the streets for anything that could satisfy their cravings.

People changed at night, she realized after doing late night shifts for so long, and it was a change most people wouldn't want to entertain. She got hit on, leered on, sometimes groped by drunken bastards who thought sexual harassment was okay when intoxicated, but still a job is a job, and Tiffany was thankful for the food it brought to her table, for paying for the roof that covered her head.

Eventually she learned how to deal with them and their quirks, and soon enough nothing bothered her anymore.

Except for this weird girl and her pancakes.

Tiffany frowned as she kept her eyes on the girl who was now immersed at the puddle of syrup in front of her.

"You're drunk, aren't you?" The waitress asked, raising her eyebrow when the girl looked at her with wide eyes. Either drunk or wasted, she added in her mind.

"I'm not sure."

Tiffany almost scoffed. "How can you not be sure?" She bit back, annoyed for some reason.

"I haven't been drunk before," the girl answered, unsure. Her forehead was creased and she was pouting.

Tiffany rolled her eyes. Just ignore and walk away, she told herself, clutching the handle of the coffee pot a little tighter. She wasn't sure why she waited for her answer either, but right now she figured it would be better to just go back to her station behind the counter. The diner was relatively empty, but continuing her chat with the obliviously drunk kid was taking a toll on her patience, and it wasn't helping that her shift had just started. She couldn't afford to be pissed the whole night, not if she wanted to survive.

The girl reminded Tiffany of a teenager who tried to get drunk for the first time, and she just couldn't deal with something like that right now.

She sighed, muttering an 'excuse me' before walking away from the girl who was still following her with her eyes.

It was half an hour later when Tiffany confirmed that the girl with the pancakes was actually really drunk.

She went to her table again after the girl had raised her hand in the air like an eager student who couldn't wait to be called by the teacher, calling for her attention.

"Yes?" Tiffany asked carefully, trying to at least sound friendly.

The girl finally smiled, revealing all her teeth in a wide grin. "Can I have more pancakes, please?" She requested, pointing at her empty plate.
