Prologue
No one is too sure where or when the outbreak first happened. But it is believed to have started somewhere in Central Africa. At least, that was the first country to fall. The infection had spread to all countries before it had been noticed. Within the first week of the outbreak the death-toll had risen to over two billion.
The infection passed on to another subject by different ways. Biting, scratching and in some cases, getting blood in the face or mouth. The infection killed the subject as quickly as it can. The quickest it has taken someone was recorded at three minutes, the longest was ten.
Once the patient has been infected. And die. They come back as flesh-eating mindless beings. They show no emotions, only wanting to devour flesh. They have been named several things. But mainly called “Zombies”. The name was originally laughed at for the use of it in video games. But was soon taken seriously.
The Military had forced smaller towns to move into the larger cities. They had kept robbing and theft to a minimum by locking all shops or warehouses. Which forced the citizens to stay in camps. But that only made it spread faster. The larger American and English cities fell within a week of the smaller cities and towns merging with them.
Two months after the initial outbreak all forms of media was shut down. Television networks, radio and cell phone coverage were all shut down. A few days later all internet search engines were all shut down. Governments had fallen, the world was in chaos. By the three month mark the human population was at an estimated 70 million.
Rob was surrounded. His plan had failed. Everyone he knew had been torn apart before him. Some of them had already turned. The lucky few were completely devoured. Nothing left to come back and haunt them. The unlucky few were half eaten; but still apart of this earth.
The small group of friends that he had formed had been some of the hardest people he had known. Harrison, one of the men he had travelled with since the beginning. Had lost his wife and brother. His seven year old son had been traveling with them but was bitten while on a supply run and had to be put down. Rob remembered how Harrison had stopped eating or drinking. He had stopped talking and helping around the small camp they had made. Rob had found Harrisons body the next morning. His head blown in and the automatic pistol still clutched in his lifeless hand.
And now. All they had done was for nothing. He was standing on the roof of a small shed surrounded by them. Some of their faces were half rotted away. Some of their faces his friends.
The shed was in the middle of a field. The only nearby buildings was a small house that had been burned down. The shed was small and made of cheap aluminium. The things were clawing at it. Rob could feel it weakening beneath his feet.
Rob knew that three things were going to happen. First; The Remington 870 would run out of ammunition even if he had more shells he wouldn’t be able to take them all out. And the sound from the Shotgun would attract more of them.
Secondly, the shed would either give way. One of the sides would buckle under the attack of the things. Or more and more would start appearing. Their mass would push it down either way.
Thirdly. They would kill him. Devour his body and organs until there was nothing left but bones and blood. Or, if they didn’t devour his whole body, he would become one of them. His dead, mind-less body would rise up again and roam the earth.
Rob had seen his family and friends die. And then come back as one of them. They had no feelings, no emotions. When Rob’s wife had come back he had shot her in the chest. But she didn’t feel a thing. She had been coming at him. He arms outspread, ready to eat him
