Well, here I am.
Baker's Street Uni, and I must say, it's a lot bigger than the photos on the site make it look. There's these massive, huge campus buildings for all sorts of subjects and a little way down the path (I found out from the sign map thing) there's the student accomodation building. I hope to God, I'm not stuck in a flat with some loud, rowdy party head who's up till one in the morning boozing it up and disturbing me because I doubt I'd last one study term living with someone like that never mind two or three.
I started walking, lugging my stupidly heavy suitcase along the white-ish grey cobble till I reached the monster of a building. It looked like a recently built and pretty well presented block, all the windows had different little objects on the window sill and curtains so people had definitely already made themselves at home. I had a little bubbly mix of excitement and anxiousness in my stomach, excitement because I'm finally independent and have my own place, but anxious to see whatever random stranger I'll have to share a house with.
The stairs were an absolute nightmare to get up, I mean, carrying a suitcase that probably weighed the same as half a person up six flights of stairs that had about 17 steps per flight was a task and a half but I finally made it to room 221b.I stood there for about two or three minutes, I had my key but I didn't know whether I should awkwardly knock first in case my new roommate wasn't expecting me this early or just barge in. Decided with the first option and knocked quietly.
I was met with a long silence, maybe he wasn't in or was asleep?
Knocked again and just when I thought to give up and just open the door myself, it swung open quickly. A bloke about my age, with black curly hair and really defined cheek bones popped his head out with a really unamused face.
There was a rough five or six seconds of awkward silence before I decided to speak
"Um hi, I'm Joh-"
"You're John Watson and my roommate for the year. Yes you can come in and no I don't bother with small talk so it's best if you and I just keep out of each other's way for the duration we'll be living together" he interrupted, before popping his head back in the room and leaving the door open for me. I was actually really confused as to how this random stranger knew my name but didn't
ask because he didn't seem like the type who's keen on questions.
Upon entering the room, the first thing to catch my eye was the left wall. Cascaded of neon coloured paper spattered the wall, each filled with dozens of little notes in very neat handwriting. The writing from what I could read, ranged from simple seemingly unrelated words like "red coat" or "black shoes" to complex biology and chemistry study notes. I was so mesmerized by each little post-it that seemingly detailed my roommates every thought that I didn't notice his harsh, cold glare for about a minute. When I did bring my eyes to meet his, I felt really uncomfortable. It was just one of those stares y'know? The kind that makes you feel like they're sort of burning into your soul and scanning every tiny detail of you, such scrutiny made me turn my eyes down to the beige carpet and begin to fidget. Then I remembered that I hadn't begun unpacking my stuff so, mostly to busy myself after such an awkward interaction, I unzipped and began scanning my bag.I was reminded of the fresh smell of home and let out a little sigh, mad to think I wouldn't be home again with my family for a good few months, even in college I was hardly away from home but now I'm living miles away.
First thing I unpacked were my study books, most of the heftier books were for my biology classes, I took mainly biology courses because I've always wanted to be a doctor since I was little. Never really knew if it was the good person in me wanting to help and save as many people as I could, or if it was just the adventurer in me wanting a fresh lick of life experience. Finally, after I'd finished unpacking my clothes and other keepsakes, I flopped down on the small, wooden bed. Completely shattered after all the travel. Just as I was about to doze off where I was, I felt the sense that I was being watched, call it intuition but I knew the guy on the other side of the room was staring at me again. I really didn't know whether to look at him in the hopes that he looked away out of awkwardness or just turn over, try to get some shut eye and ignore him. The uncomfortable silence was suddenly broken by a loud thud as someone barged into the room.
Well that's a wrap for chapter 1! Hoping the pacing wasn't abysmal and that any hoomans reading this are enjoying it
I will be making future chapters longer as this first one was mainly used for scene setting as opposed to major character interaction so never fear if you're the type of reader who prefers binging long chapters.
