Mayumi did not stop at all throughout the next day. He did not eat, nor did he sleep. He did not pause to take a breath until he had steered them out of the storm towards land. He did this with one thought in his mind, and one thought only: Save Ling.
Towards the middle of the day, the storm began to clear. As the ship glided steadily through the waters below, the thunder stopped. The lightning struck no more. The rain began to lighten, and before Mayumi knew it, the sun was peeking through the clouds. The storm was over!
As the sun's light grew brighter and brighter, Mayumi began to see a small speck of green in the distance. As the ship drew closer and closer, Mayumi began to make out what it was. Land.
“Land Ho!” he shouted gleefully. One by one, all of the passengers of the ship climbed cautiously onto the top deck. First came the crew of pirates who worked on the ship, mumbling to one another about whether it was safe to be on the deck anymore. Next came Charlie, leading a very bruised and banged-up Captain, who was on crutches.
“He’s bandaged up pretty darn good, I reckon, but he’ll be fine!” Charlie called to Mayumi, gesturing towards the Captain.
The last of all to step out onto the deck was Ling. As he walked over to Mayumi, a wide grin broke out on his face.
“Well, friend, you did it,” he said to Mayumi, “I always knew you had it in you!”
Mayumi laughed, ”No you didn’t, Ling! You don’t even know what happened, do you?”
“Did a giant, man-eating walrus attack you in your sleep?” replied Ling.
“Not quite, Ling,” chuckled Mayumi, and together, he and Ling steered the ship the rest of the way to land.
