I reached over onto the passengers side of my car, trying to keep my eyes on the road as I popped open the glove compartment. A little trick I had picked up shortly after smart phones took over the planet.
"Hello?" I answered without checking the caller ID.
"Hi, honey!" My wife of almost seven years voice came too cheerily over the line. I instantly regretted picking up.
"Oh, hey sweetie. What's uh, going on?"
"I just wanted to know where you were?"
"I'm driving..."
"To?"
"Work, Elisa. Just like I do every morning, Monday through Thursday."
"Oh, teaching the kids?"
"Well," I chuckled slightly, "They aren't really kids..."
Rather than a response, I heard a soft laugh from the other end, a sign that she was going to prolong this conversation.
"I've got to go, honey." I spoke slowly, a minor fib to get her off the line and to salvage my last few moments of silence.
"Oh, okay, I love you."
"You too." I tried not to sound dismissive, taking the phone from my ear and hitting the end button before tossing it into the back seat. Don't get me wrong, I had loved my wife dearly when we first married but here lately, I'd began to wish I never bought that ring.
