Hey readers! Thanks for clicking on this book ;) Just a quick note to say that this book is written in the perspective of Josie Baker Xx

----------

The bell rings, signalling the end of the fourth period and the start of our lunch break.

"Right class," Mr Evans - our chemistry teacher - announces whilst we all pack up our things. "Your homework is due next Tuesday. Have it on my desk by 9 am, or detention."

I slide my notebook into my rucksack and zip it up, throwing it over my shoulder when a hand rests on my arm. Turning around, "save me a seat in the cafeteria? I've just got to run to my locker." My best friend Elle asks, giving me a warm and gentle smile.

"Sure, but be quick."

We turn our separate ways, and I trundle the hallway to the cafeteria past clumps of girls and guys belonging to different cliques. Desperately trying to avoid anyone taller than me, I manoeuvre to the cafeteria entrance.

Just before my hand reaches the door, it swings towards me at top speed, knocking into my forehead and causing me to stumble. My eyes water a little, my visions goes dark and my head pounds solidly. I reach a hand to my forehead to check there isn't any blood, even though I can feel my brain bashing into the sides of my skull.

"Sorry dork." A popular bites, giving me the evilest of glances with piercing blue eyes.

I manage to find my regular table in the cafeteria without any more injuries, and Elle is already there waiting. Elle's eyes dart up from her sandwich when I throw myself onto the seat.

Our cafeteria table is secluded in the corner of the cafeteria beside the bins. It's the table no one else sits at, which is why it's a prime spot for me and my best friend; it's never taken and it is nowhere near any of the populars.

"What happened to your head?" Elle frowns, finishing her sandwich. "Did someone hit you?"

"No, Chloe Coleman threw the door at my face." I wince, rolling my fingertips lightly over the forming bruise. "You've finished lunch already?"

"I was hungry!" Elle scowls while flipping her long brunette locks to the side. "So get this, I was walking past our math class earlier and I heard Jane say to Cassy that she ... "

I zone out most of the time when my best friend goes on a rant. I've learned that if you just sit and nod, and say 'yeah' or 'really' every four to five seconds, you can get away with it.

Our school, Edgewater Academy, is split into two sides: the populars, and the unpopulars.

The populars, they're either members of sports teams or have over 5000 Instagram followers. They're mostly horrible, bitter and cruel, but there are a few exceptions. The unpopulars just happen to be everyone else. Only around 25% of students are populars though - the rest are social nobodies.

And Chloe Coleman is the head of the populars. Sixteen years old, she's captain of the cheerleading squad, she's slept with all the popular guys, allegedly met a few hundred celebrities and you never see her without immaculately conditioned blonde hair.

"Josie ... Josie!"

"Huh?" I raise an eyebrow, regaining focus. "What were you talking about?"

"It doesn't matter." She shrugs. "Don't make it obvious when you turn around, but Shane is right behind you."

My heart stops for a second. Looking subtly over my right shoulder, I lay my eyes on his well-toned body.

Trust me, Shane Coleman is the hottest guy in school. His build is broad-shouldered, toned biceps that aren't over the top but you can see through his shirt; he's the only student that can break the dress code and not get detention. His dirty blonde hair is swept effortlessly up into a quiff, and under his dazzling blue eyes lay well-positioned freckles across his cheeks and his nose. Shane has one of those smirks that catch your breath every time, not to mention he's a straight-A student and volunteers on weekends at homeless shelters between football games.

"If I could get my hands on him for a night, you don't know what I would do to him." Elle drools. "I mean really, he must have a ten-pack, and I bet he's great in bed."

"Elle!" I snigger, following Shane with my eyes until he's out of sight. "Right, I'm going to the library."

"At least have some lunch, Josephine!" She knows I hate being called Josephine. "You study enough already! You've never gotten a grade lower than an A."

"And I plan to keep my track record." Slinging my bag back over my shoulder, I blow Elle a kiss. "I'll call you after school."

"Love you."

"Love you too hun," I wave to my gorgeous best friend.
