Daniels POV:"ARGH!" I scream out again as I feel the whip make contact with my naked body for what must have been the 50th time. I close my eyes as I throw up.
"Stop please! Your going to kill him!" I heard Lucy scream out her whole body shaking harder than mine was.
She fought against the restraints that were put on her after she had kicked one of the tormentors in his soft spot.
Her neck was ruthlessly grabbed and held so her face was positioned in the direction of me. Another onslaught of painful lashes make contact with my back as I grit my teeth closing my eyes. The last hit was used with so much force my chest made contact with the damp ground as I fell.
"Stop! I know who the killer is, it's not him so please, please stop." She was screaming loudly tripping over her words as I said this, I internally shook my head "Lucy, shut the hell up."
Another painful clap as the whip hits me I let out a groan.
"No Daniel they are going to kill you at the rate, why should I stand here and watch you die when I can save you by telling the truth?"
The guard behind her stepped up cutting off my view of her. "Can you tell us his name?" He asked aggressively.
"Yes- no I can't, he never gave us his name but I know where he is currently staying, it's about a half a mile that way, I'll take you there... It's dark you'll need a guid through the cave"
At that moment I realized what she was doing, she was leading them to the mines we had set up about a week earlier in attempt to throw off any one who thought to come after us, sadly we were ambushed from the other way, but this is perfect. I decided to keep playing along suspicious that they would figure it out.
"Lucy, shut. Up. Please- argh!" I let out as the whip comes down once again.
"Daniel your going to be dead if I don't do this, unchain me" she held out her arms to the guard behind her, "I won't take you there if I am not unchained. Hesitantly the biggest guard shook his head and the chain falls to the floor as he unlocks them. All of them come towards her "lead us".
She walks in front of them with her back straight taking them in the direction if the caves, she pauses and turns to me walking towards me, the guards stand there being kind enough for the one last embrace, she bends down hugging my neck lightly and whispers in my ear "as soon as we are out of sight go to the lake, I'll meet you there withen 20 minutes, if I'm not there I went up with the explosion so go with out me, I love you" I shake my head understanding, I wish I was in her place, but I knew it would be u fathomable for her to be In my position.
She stood up and took her place in from of the guards.
Lucinda's POV: I walk silently and quickly leading them to their soon to be death beds. As we get closer to the cave I stop and move behind them, and they turn towards me, "what is wrong?" The tallest asks harshly. I pause gathering my courage, "I-I'm too scared to go in there, he's a bad man he might kill me... May I go?" I look down pulling the best expression of fear I could manage. I hear the biggest give a grunt and turn back towards the cave, I count to three and turn away slowly making a bee line for the biggest cluster of trees. As soon as I feel far enough I break into a run tripping repeatedly... "1...2....-" I count to three and hear the explosion diving down covering my head with my hands. I feel the heat and look up, I watch in terror as fire rains down as the sky is engulfed in black smoke.
I stand up quickly and run but a large log eaten up my flames crashes ontop my back pushing me back on the ground, I let out a scream as the smell of burning flesh meets my nose. I get up and try running again... Just a but farther.
I scream again as I break through the tree line and see Daniel.
Daniels POV: I fall to the sand just at the waters edge waiting, I estimate 10 minutes have gone by... Then 20... I hear the explosion and watch as the sky fills with a dark smoke, to my growing anticipation refusing to let her go 30 more minutes go by.
I hear a scream and instantly rise yelling for Luce. I scan the tree lines looking for her small figure.
Finally after a few seconds I watch her stumble out her expression full if pain. I tell again making my way to her as fast as my body would allow me to.
She slams into my arms and that's when my eyes are introduced to the horrific sight if her back which was just a patch of pealing, burning flesh.
I half walk half drag her to the water, throwing her in pushing her back under. She quickly stops screaming sighing quietly to herself. My hands fumble uselessly, "Luce... Are you ok? Where else are you hurt? I need-" she cuts my off with her hand revealing a weak smile, "I did it they walked right into the trap without any sort of doubt" she laughs darkly and all I can do is smile at her "good job I'm proud of you... But now... We need to go... And you need to get rest as soon as possible, but we aren't safe here"
She looks at me "the raft we came here on... Do you think it's still there?"
I ponder this and shake my head "will you be ok alone for a few minutes?" She smiles "of course"
I quickly stand up and no longer concerned about the blood dripping from my back I run to a over hang of rocks praying that the raft is still there, sure enough it was, it had turned a shade of green over the weeks it had been sitting there. I grabbed it and noticed one paddle was gone and there was a slight crack in the second. Happy this was all the damage it took I drag it across the water towards Luce. She attempts to get up as I get closer, but she falls back limply cringing.
I help her up and lean her against the side of the raft. I rip off the remains of her shirt and rinse it turning her over I carefully dab at the burns. I watched as puss was already begging to make it's way up, good so she still has enough strength to heal herself. I tie the shirt around her chest as a type of shirt to cover her. I then get out of the raft and push us out deeper holding on to the paddle tightly.
I hop in lightly and begin to row us out to one of the 100's of islands off the coast of this one.
Glancing at Luce frequently I think about where we will stay and which island. I turn the raft making out way to a smaller island that I remember was deserted after the war many years ago.
As soon as I see the reef below us I get out and swim the raft the rest of the way my arms burning from the pain of rowing.
My feet soon make contact with the sand and small rocks, pulling Luce behind me I sit at the waters edge watching her sleep.
I took notice to how her skin color was starting to return to her normal pale and she was more relaxed, I assumed that the burn was almost healed, Luce being half immortal gave her the ability to heal things but that burn was so serious she'll most likely will always be burdened with a large scar across most of her back.
I lean my head against the raft's edge and doze off sleeping lightly.
Lucinda's POV: I awake to the sound of a near by dog. I look up to see Daniel passed out, his head resting on the side. I tap on his shoulder lightly and watch him start awake. He takes in our surroundings and smiles at me softly, I loved his smile it was something that made you feel almost weightless suspending in time I sometimes wonder if it was just my love for him that made me swoon each time or the smile itself.
Taking a step out of the floatations device I am greeted with warm, salty water. As I stretch my back I notice the burns don't hurt anymore, I reach my hand back as far and brush my skin... It's bumpy there's definitely a burn scar there, I wonder how big it is. Daniel grabs my hand and rises slowly, he doesn't heal as quickly as I do since his father was only half immortal and his mother was full human, I watch him cringe slightly as he stretches his shoulders, I see the wounds have healed a little bit but not much. I take the raft in my hands dragging it up the sand while dropping it away from the tides greedy hands, high tide is dangerous during the winter.
Gathering Luce in my arms I break out in a smile... "We're almost away from it all Luce... Almost."
"I love you Daniel" she whispers and I return the show of affection with a kiss...
