"Say 'Mama'. " I told Tommi. He just babbles, as babies do.
"No, Tommi, say 'Mommy'. " Toni says. It's been a constant argument as to whether will he say Mama or Mommy first.
"Oh my goodness. Look at the time. Chéri, we have to go, or else we are going to be late for our first ultrasound." We got in the car and left.
We arrive and fill out the forms like we did with Tommi's appointments. They call us back, "Mrs. and Mrs. Blossom-Topaz?"
When Dr. Wilson begins, she delivers quite the shock to us.
"It's twins!" she exclaims
"Are you sure?" I stammer. Toni and I exchange a look while Tommi toddles around the room. Were we ready for three kids?
"Quite sure. In fact, because you're 18 weeks, I can tell you the genders. Would you like to know?" We discuss and decide.
"We'd like to find out privately and tell our friends later. So, yes. Please tell us the genders." Toni tells her. We wait while she writes the genders down.
Dr. Wilson hands us an envelope on our way out and says, "I put the genders in here. Thank you for your business."
Toni, Tommi, and I head for Pop's. We speculate on the genders, wondering.
"What'll it be, ladies?"
"2 milkshakes, FP. Strawberry and chocolate."
"The usual, coming right up."
When FP gives us our shakes, Toni and I lock eyes. "So, are you ready to know our babies?" I nod vigorously. She slowly opens the envelope.
"Toni! Come on, the suspense is killing me!" She chuckles.
"Alright, baby. I'm done teasing. Here, you take one paper and I'll take the other." I take one and then, "One's a boy!" "One's a girl!" I kiss her on the check. She kisses me back and we laugh.
"Tommi," I look at him. "You're going to have a brother and sister!" And as if my day couldn't get any better, he looks at me and says, "Mama!"
I clap my hand over my mouth and look at my wife. "Well, well. Antoinette has lost the battle of 'Mama' and 'Mommy' ." She smiles and picks up Tommi.
"You traitor!" she says in that special voice reserved for kids. "You were supposed to say, 'Mommy' !"
___________________________We hosted a brunch several weeks after we found out the genders. Only Veronica couldn't make it, much to my disappointment.
"So, Toni and I have some news. Three weeks ago, we found out that we aren't having one baby, but two!"
"Cheryl!" Polly exclaimed. "What is it with Blossoms and twins? Did find out the genders?"
Toni replied, "We did, and we decided on names. A boy and a girl."
"We're naming the boy Charlie Jason and the girl Celia Rose." I continued. The brunch lasted for several more hours. Tommi played with Juniper and Dagwood, Polly's twins, and Reagan, Betty and Jughead's daughter. When everyone left, Toni approached me, "How are you, and don't lie. I know the ordeal with your mother had a big impact on you." She knows me so well. I sigh, "I'm fine. Really happy as well. However," I pause, focusing on Tommi. He was teetering around as if he was drunk. "I think Tommi could stand for a nap."
Toni put him down for his nap and came downstairs. Music was still playing. This particular song was considered "our song". Toni came downstairs and immediately recognized it. As much as I hate dancing, she made me. We sang along, as we do, "Although I'm not perfect, I feel perfect in your eyes." Collide, by Rachel Platten. While old, it's still my favorite.
