part 0:
pastries—
"order 53!"
the thin boy dragged the plate across the counter, layers of sugar and sticky sweet layered across the surface. greedy hands plucked the dessert from his hold, sliding past the line that continued growing, on and on. people began piling behind the doors, huffing at their watches, squinting at the tables packed against the walls.
min yoongi wiped at the sweat trickling down his forehead, pushing his visor up enough to see the rest of the dining room, extended to the back where booths were lined, equally as occupied. the new cashier was fumbling with dollar bills, tears building in the corner of her eyes. he sighed, heavily.
this wasn't working.
"go to back, okay?" he muttered, leaning to whisper in the girl's ear as she slammed the resister, startled at his sudden movements. but as soon as she'd processed his words, she retreated, tripping over her apron as she scuffled away from the ever-growing line. he took her place at the front, cracking his knuckles against the counter as another new customer stepped forward. his smile was tight and plastic.
"welcome to MinCafe, what can i get for you?"
the lobby had cleared eventually, trickling down to the regulars as time wore on, yoongi quickly weeding out the customers that only wanted a drink, or a quick pack of potato crisps, having memorized the menu and the hesitant glances over the years. and once the line had died to a slow stream, he'd called the new girl back, flying to the kitchen where his father worked, fuming.
he glanced at the latest order, creme puffs and a skim vanilla latte, cold, pretending he couldn't see the man staring at him, or feel the gaze piercing through his skull, as he began rolling the dough between his fingers.
"yoongi."
the icing bag confirmed to his palm as he squeezed, dollops between hunks of sweetened bread, folded in the middle where the two would break apart.
"i thought we talked about leaving backline without my permission."
the pressed brew trickled from the machine in droplets, foaming over ice, and the paper that held the customers name crinkled at the sudden change of temperature.
"are you listening to me?"
he glanced up at his father quickly, holding the steel gaze even as the older man moved his arms viciously, throwing cakes and treats together like every movement had already been analyzed, memorized, perfected. he looked away, nodding curtly.
"it's not to happen again, unless i say so. do you want to keep this job or not?"
the top oven dinged excessively, the door yelping in protest as the boy yanked it open, sliding the tray of puffs out with ease. he set it on the cooling rack, using tongs to break them apart, and place them on one of the porcelain dishes they had stacked to the side. another dollop of creme, two, or three, over to the side in an elegant manner, a flower, almost. he clicked the lid onto the cold beverage, letting the drink slip between his fingers as he drew a smiley face on the side.
the older man was still talking, he supposed, when he lifted the two items and pushed through the swinging doors, calling the order name, instead of number, momentarily forgetting about the newly added feature as he placed the order on the counter, searching the lobby.
chocolate brown eyes met his, merely a few feet away from the pick up area, which made him realized exactly how loud he'd shouted, and how hard he'd set the food atop the metal.
"sorry," he mumbled, glanced away from the other boy as he moved forward, hesitantly. his pastel sweater was pulled over his hands, leaving just the edge of his fingers to grab at the plate and drink he'd ordered.
"thank you."
yoongi looked at the boy again, at "chim", as he'd ordered by, and caught the small grin on his face, the dusty pink cheeks that rested under thick lashes, and curled, rosy hair. he felt his own cheeks between to heat up, hopefully hidden by the shadow cast from his hat.
but his father was calling, overly enthusiastic now, and the boy was walking away, sweater pulled tight across his chest, and yoongi didn't think he'd ever have to see him again, or have deal with the tug in his gut that had surprised him at first glance.
but those creme puffs were absolutely heavenly, and park jimin would most definitely be back again.
