Vergil
School. It felt strange to be back, after a surprisingly brief two month summer vacation going absolutely nowhere, and staying in good old Hunter’s Grange, California. I hadn’t done much, just a couple of jobs here and there and then found that summer was gone, and I found myself back at school. Of course, I did feel a lot cooler seeing as I skipped a year, so instead of being a sophomore, I was a junior.
Seeing as I had an hour or so till lessons, I had anchored myself in the library. I took in how the sun streamed through one of the windows and rested on one of the various leather beanbags- the one I was sitting on right now. God it felt good. The only problem now was finding my lessons when the time came to go, but that was still a whole hour away, and anyhow, I found a book abandoned on the floor which had caught my attention; with an amusing plot of a normal, (almost mind-numbingly generic) teenage girl who had fell in love with her vampire boyfriend.
Because that would be a completely normal relationship. I thought to myself as I read more anyway. It was totally gripping as I sank even further into the beanbag, relishing the thought of a good read. This is why I loved the library. So quiet, no disturbances at all and the best thing is I could sit down, take a load off and relax without getting interrup-
‘Dude tell me you’ve seen the new girl, she isn’t from round here and my bet is that’s she’s single.’ A voice whispered behind me. I shook my head and grinned, already knowing who the mysterious speaker was. My best friend, also wannabe matchmaker Ash, who had thought to make it his sole mission to have me practically joined at the hip to any girl he thought was ‘good looking’ since ninth grade.
‘It’s been too long since you last had a girlfriend man, ever since-’
‘Drop it.’ I retorted quickly, not letting him finish.
I couldn’t, and I wouldn’t, even think about what he was about to say next. Ash flopped onto another beanbag next to me, casually swiping his light brown fringe away from his eyes. ‘I’m being serious though, it wouldn’t hurt to get to know her you know, you always keep you to yourself, and it’s not healthy Vergil.’ Again, I rolled my eyes. What are you, my mother?
‘Don’t you have a lesson right about now? It’s coming to nine and you always have a lesson first.’ I was trying to desperately get him away, so I could escape the talk of relationships, and everything else. I mean, it was waaay too early in the morning for that kind of talk and I didn’t even feel up to it now, let alone anytime soon. Ash’s eyebrows shot up in mock surprise, knowing exactly why I reminded him of his lessons.
‘That must be a really good book to make you want to get rid of me so badly.’ While he did this he made a face, which made him look even weirder than he was at most times. I couldn’t help but grin at him, he always cracked me up. ‘Go to your lessons, you’re gunna be late if you don’t hurry. And consider getting a haircut soon man, your mop’s beginning to get messy.’ He gasped in mock horror, his blue eyes twinkling. His lady-killer eyes, I paused, then chuckled at the thought as he picked up his bag and turned to leave while I settled back into my book.
‘Oh and Vergil?’ he called from somewhere near the door.
‘Yeah?’
‘If you change your mind she’s in the study hall.’ I frowned. That was on the other side of the school, and I didn’t want to go to the other side of the school, I just wanted to sit on the beanbag and read my book in peace. I groaned, knowing that eventually, my curiosity would get the better of me. And he knew that as well. His own idea of a joke, I suppose, making me walk to the other side of the school.
