Augustus's POV:
As soon as we enter the house, it was a hazy, sweaty mess. It smelled like someone had been smoking, there was alcohol everywhere, and the air was thick with sweaty bodies from dancing. It was a wonder the neighbors hadn't called the police from the loudness of the music and the craziness happening around us.
I look over at Jess and Adelyn to see their eyes wide as saucers. I have to chuckle to myself.
"Hey, you wanted to come!" I practically yell over the music.
Jess just looks at me and nods her head slowly.
"Come on, we'll only stay for a bit." I say pulling them both toward the kitchen.
They quick pick up two glasses to drink but I stop them before they can take a drink.
"Smell it first, no alcohol." I say scrunching up my nose.
They both immediately put down the glasses and grab some water. I forgot how intense some of these parties could get. I'm glad I left my partying days behind and started focusing more on school and the things that really mattered. Hazel really saved me from getting into a lot of trouble.
"Hey!" I hear a voice call from behind me. All three of us spin around to see Dan coming down the hallway swaying left and right with a cup in his hand.
'Oh no, not now...' I think to myself.
"Didn't think id see you here! Finally decide to be cool again?" he asks his words slurring together.
"No, thanks, I'm fine. Jess just got invited and we decided to stop in quick. We were actually just leaving." I say glaring at him.
"Come on Jess, Adelyn, I think it's time we leave." I say quietly trying to get them to come with me.
I suddenly get a strange feeling in my stomach and I just want to out of here as fast as I can. Jess and Adelyn just follow me and we exit the house feeling the cool air sweep across our faces. Behind me I can hear Dan calling out to me, but he is obviously to drunk to realize I've left.
"Well, I think that will be the last party I'll ever go to." Says Jess scrunching up her nose.
"Yeah, to much alcohol and smoke for me." Mentions Adelyn.
Good, I hope they don't want to go back again because I know I don't.
We drive Adelyn home and the girls just talk while I stay quiet for the rest of the way to her house.
Jess and I both wave to Adelyn as she goes back in her house. As soon as she's gone, Jess turns toward me.
"Are you okay?" she asks looking worried. "You look like you are going to throw up."
"I'm fine." I lie.
"Gus, I know you're not." She says looking at me.
"Fine, it's just, going to that party made me remember all the times that I hung out with those jerks. How much I didn't like it, and how I wish Hazel was here with me. I'm sorry, but I just didn't like it especially when Dan was giving me a hard time. I thought I had gotten away from all of this, but I guess I never will." I say looking at the road ahead.
"Augustus, I know that Hazel misses you to. I'm here to help you through this, we don't have to go to anymore parties. If you didn't want to go in the first place, you should've said something. You, me, and Adelyn could've found something else to do." She says shrugging her shoulders.
"Thank you." I breathed in relief of not having to go to anymore of those parties. "You know, i have actually been happier than I have in a long time since you came. I'm glad that we became friends and thank you for being there for me." I say to her.
"That's what friends are for, okay?" she says leaning her head on my shoulder which sends sparks through my nerves.
"Okay." I whisper back smiling.
