There was a general hum surrounding me consisting of people's chatter and laughter as I sat in my local coffee shop. My phone buzzed and I could see the name flash on my screen , it was a text message from Alfred 'Hey Lex, I'm running a few minutes late SORRY!'. I smile at my phone and send him a quick response, 'You will end up being late to your own funeral Alfie!'

The next ten minutes were spent scrolling through various social media apps as I sipped on my iced coffee and watched the world pass me by.

"Hey Lex, how are you doing?" my best friend says as he walks towards me.

"So Alfred, what reasonable excuse do you have for being late this time?" I joked as I gave him a quick hug and sat back down.

"Sorry Lex I totally thought I had more time and suddenly it was time to go!" He exclaimed with a slight laugh as he wondered off to order a coffee. There was something endearing about the way Alfred was always late, he was a free spirit and lived his life to the fullest. It was one of the many things that I loved about Alfred and was incredibly jealous of.

"So Lex, how was your holiday? Were there any fit guys in Italy?" He asked while sitting down next to me with his coffee.

"Italy was beautiful; I mean the food was incredible but no seriously no guys whatsoever," I told him with a lack of enthusiasm hoping that he wouldn't pick up on my tone. There was something incredible about Italy, I had seen most of 'Sights', each place had so many people and yet I could have been the only person in the world as I enjoyed the beauty.

"Well it's Italy, of course the food was incredible! But definitely no hunks?" he questioned wriggling his eyebrows at me jokingly.

I sighed, "No, there were no hunks. Remember rule 1 we never keep secrets. Plus you know how nervous I get around guys."

"Lex you are gorgeous I wish you could see that," he smiled apologetically at me probably feeling guilty for pushing the matter. Alfie was forever telling me how beautiful I was, I think secretly he thought if he kept telling me then maybe I would believe him one day. There was something within me which hoped someday someone would see what Alfie sees in me and sweep me off my feet like in all the Disney fairy tales.

Minutes passed as we both sipped on our drinks in silence, watching the world go by and thinking about life.

"Earth to Lex? Are you there?" Alfred says waving his hand in front of my face.

"Huh yes sorry I am here, you may need to repeat though" I replied wondering how long I had been in my head for.

"Lex I asked if you were ready to go back to mine?" I nod my head following my best friend out to his car.

Alfred fills the silence in our journey, talking about how much his brother annoys him, possible ideas for our birthday party and what to wear.

"Alfred do you think someone will love me one day?" I asked absentmindedly.

"Shit Lex, of course I do. How often do I tell you I love you and how great you are?" He said firmly looking straight ahead at the road.

"All the time I guess" I shrugged knowing that my question had caught him off guard.

"So moving on, Jacob is back from uni and after a single day I think I may have to hurt him" he joked trying to change the topic.

"He's really not that Bad Alfie," I laughed gently wondering if Jacob had changed much.

Jacob was 2 years older than Alfie, so inevitably they argued, and as boys they never could get along. Jacob was tall with gorgeous green eyes and the most incredible body you've ever seen.

"Christ Alfie are you trying to give me whiplash?" I questioned as he parked up in his driveway.

"You are just upset that you haven't got your own car" Alfie teased causing a smile to form across my face.

We walked into his house discussing our thoughts for this year at sixth form and what universities we were going to apply for. We stopped at the kitchen where his mother was, she was preparing a roast dinner for their lunch. This was one of their family traditions, for as long as I could remember I had spent my Sunday's with the Hudson family eating a roast which had been lovingly prepared by Karen Hudson. "Hi Mrs Hudson," I say giving her a gentle hug.

"Lex you can call me Karen," she smiled softly.

"Ok so Lex and I are going to catch up," Alfie said grabbing my hand and pulling me towards his room in a hurry.

Hours passed as we listened to music and discussed the outfit options with our first day back at sixth form looming. We used to spend every summer together, doing things like fashion shows and dancing around to music like lunatics.

"Hey Alfred can you move your car out the way you twat" Jacob says as he pops his round the door.

"Uh excuse me, yes I can but what's the magic word" Alfie teases his brother.

"Please? You're lucky, if Lex wasn't here I would have slapped you for that. Lex how was your holiday?" He says looking me right in the eyes as if he was searching into my soul.

"Yes it was ok, beautiful weather and lots of incredible food and sights. How's uni?" I said giving Jacob a quick hug once Alfie had left the room.

"Uni is ok, I mean the studying is quite intense but it's nice being away from home" he shrugged.

"Hey douchebag you are now free to get off the drive," Alfie said as he barged back in the room.

"Thanks Alfie, catch you two idiots later," he joked walking out of the door shaking his head.

Alfie continued the conversation from the car, throwing several ideas at me about who to invite and what to have as the theme or whether to have a theme at all. Alfie and I were born less than a week apart and had been sharing a birthday party since we were tiny. He informed me that this year had to be the biggest party yet, especially as it was our final year and we were 'going out with a bang' as he liked to put it. So far we had managed to establish that the party would take place at his house and we would do it on my birthday while his parents were. 'What they don't know can't hurt them' he informed me when I asked if that was a good idea.

"Lex, got your eye on anyone because we must invite them to our party" he asked still looking down at his phone.

"No, what about you though any girls taking your fancy?" I tried to deflect the question back onto him.

"I see what you did there but as it happens I do. So we must make this party a night to remember and one which even the populars go to" he replied while jotting down his must do list for the party

"You could always invite Jacob, I mean people will definitely come if they know your brother is going to be here," I suggested.

Thoughts consumed my head, this party couldn't be that bad, could it?
