In the beginning, before what many called the apocalypse, the world was decent. It wasn't in the greatest condition, but compared to the times now it was perfect.
There used to be a democracy in place, where the people of the nation got to decide who was president. There were freedoms that the people had that the government couldn't touch, like the freedom to express yourself or to practice your religion freely. Laws were in place to ensure the safety of the people. The nation was more organized then it is now... and more of a Nation to say the least.
A couple hundred years ago, there were prison outbreaks throughout the United States, known as the Great Prison War. As prisoners broke out of even the most secure prisons, they tried to take over cities, one by one. They instilled fear wherever they were, and had weapons unmatchable to the military at the time. It is still unknown how they acquired these weapons though. As they started to take over, they became Tyrant rulers, with strict rules and harsh punishments. If you broke any of the laws you were sentenced to torture beyond your minds comprehension. It was a mixture of physical and psychological torture for days on end. It drove sane men mad.
However, many of these Cities failed and ended up crumbling into themselves. By 2100, only 2 cities stood in the United States: New York and Los Angeles. Each city was destroyed by the end of the war, and they didn't bother to restore the buildings, for there was no reason to. Almost everyone fell into the same jobs: either helping build and fix weapons, or working for the tyrants in some way.
Those that built and fixed up the weapons were shackled during the day and wore a collar around their neck that was unbreakable. This collar would stab them slightly in the neck, enough to hurt, but not to kill, anytime they tried talking about the weapons, or wrote anything out about the weapons.
Those that worked for the tyrants had a variety of jobs. Some were nurses, maids, cooks, servants, and even teachers. The tyrant's children would be raised inside the home, and be homeschooled as there were no more schools. The professors were only allowed to teach certain books and certain lessons. It was mostly revolved around critical thinking and defense instead of actual studies.
The people of these two cities didn't have much to complain about. They followed the rules and stayed to themselves. They were used to it but this point, and didn't know what life was like before the war.
However, Lauren Barker, a professor at the Tyrants home, came across a book of how life was like in the past, and this sparks her interest even more. After gathering more books like this one, she finds herself longing for old times back and will do whatever it takes for that to happen.
