Home Sweet Home

The small, six seat-er plane rattled and shook as we began to get closer to the ground. The seat belt sign blinking a bright orange above our heads, I Looking at the old man next to me snoring humbly in his sleep and rolling my green eyes back to the window, it was barely a 20 minute flight from the connected Philadelphia flight, there was no really point in taking a nap i scoffed to myself.

I watched as the green scenery passed quickly through the window as the landing strip became more and more visible. This was no near close as to what California is like, i thought to myself. The green much brighter and the sky grey with the suns light gently passing through, it was so pure and gorgeous.

Quickly, i snapped out of own thoughts to see everyone standing to grab their luggage from the over head compartments and starting to escort them selves off the plane. So in a swift motion i bundled up my head phones , un did my seat belt ,and standing up, being careful not to smack my head on the top of the ceiling. We'll I'm like barely over 5'2" so i guess that's not actually a problem for me, yet i grabbed my black suitcase and tiny purse and walked off the plane giving a gentle wave and goodbye to the flight attendants.

As i walked slowly through the small airport looking for my grandma and aunt, the wheels on my suitcase softly rolled against the ground as i watched family's hug and kiss each other with large smiles because most of them happen to be college students coming home for the summer yet none of them resembled my aunt or my Nana, but how am i supposed to know what they look like? i havent seen them in over 13 years.

Just then, i heard an older woman's voice echo off the large marble walls  "Rachel, Baby, is that you?"

I stopped and turned around to see a fairly plump woman in a wheel chair. Her white hair lighter then the snow they get in the winter here in Pennsylvania. An old man and woman next to her, yet they obviously looked younger with big smiles on their faces and warm open arms.

Shyly i wheel closer as i got engulfed in hugs from my obvious relatives.

"Rachel, oh my, you look so beautiful and so much older! Not to mention your hairs gotten so long!" my wretched aunt laughed sticking her bony finger in my caramel hair.

You see, my aunt and i haven't gotten off on a good foot, when i was little she was stuck babysitting my sister and i while my mom was away sight seeing with her boyfriend. I was only about four years old and it was time for bed, my sister gently tucked in and i about to climb in when she stops me. She had picked me up and carried me to the bathroom and changed me into a pampers diaper, A DIAPER, on a four year old! ever since then I've always dreaded her and having to see her.

With a fake smile i replied back with "awwh, thank you guys so much it so great to be home."

                                                               <>><><<>><>><>><>><>>

The car ride home from the airport to my grandmas house was quick, being that it was a small off the map town, and light with some simple chit-chat added in about how i was doing, how California was or how it might be different from the Small Pennsylvanian town i was born in.

Suddenly the car parked in front of a decent sized, white, one story house with a green rug covering the front porch, the black railing popping out with a retro feel and the sidewalk close to the building leaving no room for a front yard. Looking across the small two lane street i noticed many family owned restaurants and stores. To the left of her house was a house like ours, then the local volunteer fire fighter house and to the right the 'O'Malley Funeral Home".

"great." i muttered to myself, hoping no one heard the disappointment in my voice.

As we walked inside i pushed my suitcases onto the floor quickly as a yellow and white chihuahua came running up to me barking and nipping at my ankles furiously, while a rather...uh..

"fluffy" , balding, Italian man yell at the dog through a wrapping paper tube with a McDonald's cup duct taped to the end.

"So, Rachel, honey, would you like to go upstairs and unpack your things? I bet you re tired from the long plane ride." my nana offered sweetly as she played with the stamps under her place mat.

"Yeah, of course. Thanks, nana. Ill see you at breakfast tomorrow morning." waving to her as i walked into the living room with my bags towards the two large wooden sliding doors leading to a small hallway and the steep stairs.

As i pushed past the doors, the faint memories of my sister and i growing up in this house clouded my head. The way we'd climb up and down the stairs to reach the candy bowl on the small hallway table, or the Polly pockets we'd play with on the floor while my nana watched "M.A.S.H".

A gentle sigh came out of my mouth as i climbed the 85 degree angled stairs, dragged my suitcase with a thud after each step.

Finally, at the top i turned the front bedroom in the house and pushed the door open. I locked the door behind me and dropped my suitcases to the floor, not caring how much noise it might've made. I saw the large window and walked straight to it, gently sliding it opened i crawled out onto the thick ledge over looking the long street.

The view was stunning, the way you could see over the restaurants and houses in front of this house and behind to the rows and rows of old mining house and green trees sprouting in every which way. Yet the weather a bit chilly but it felt nice against my California tanned skin. I'm not used to having so much green and gentler weather but it felt right.

Deciding i needed to get some of the stress out of my mind from the problems as to why I'm here at my grandmas after so many years. i pull out a new port cigarette and my small lighter. Flipping my hip length sand colored hair over one shoulder to make sure i would accidentally light it, i set the cigarette in my mouth and cup my hand by the end so it'll light when out of no where i hear a deep voice speak out.

"you know smoking kills."

I popped the cigarette out of my mouth and turned my head to see a gorgeous blonde boy in skinny jeans sitting on the ledge of the house next door. He rushed his fingers through his hair while His ocean colored eyes seeped into my green like the ocean draining into the sand.

"I'm Chris and you re about to lose 5 minutes from your life." he spoke as he stuck out his hand.

and for once in my life.. i was at loss for words
