Chapter 1: Mulberries

"Take one," she insisted. I stared at her. I stared at all of them. Their eyes beat into me. Thousands of pairs of eyes that were sickeningly pale green. Ice blue. White. White eyes. Why did so many of them have white eyes? She was nothing like them. Her eyes were dark brown. Cold and black, laced with warm gold.
"What are they?" I stared at the plate.
"They're mulberries!" She said as sweetly as the 'berries' on the plate must've tasted.
"Those aren't mulberries," I said, my eyes locking with hers. I felt a cold shock surge through me. Not from her. No, she could never produce anything but warmth in me. It was from them. All of the others were so cold.
"Those are mulberries," they all hissed in unison. I chose to believe them.
