AVONLEA, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

December 2nd, 1878

Gilbert Blythe fiddled with the silver quill, tossing the writing tool between his index and middle finger.

Pining and desperately longing for the break to begin, the boy was far too overwrought to, per se, simply absorb any blares nor murmurs that erupted from Mr Phillips' lesson. Not that the lesson or the small nudges and questionings from the boy next to him were anyhow his greatest concern of that current moment. It was no secret to the entirety of the class that a certain new-coming, eccentric orphan girl had captured the pure attention of Gilbert Blythe, with the shameless side-wise glances he shot at her, eyes filled with complete adoration. It wouldn't take one to know the pair's past to detect the hint of innocent love that cornered Gilbert's emerald eyes. Though it was painful to know that the only one paying attention was the petite, blonde girl in the far back of the room, her eyes following the figure Gilbert Blythe seemed to be very invested in as Josie Pye took notice as anger welled up.

"Moody, Tillie, Gilbert." Signalling to the front of the room, Mr Phillips' striking voice broke Gilbert out of his trance, Moody raising one brow at him, shifting his gaze to Riley before smirking subtly. Staring down towards the wooden floorboards, he made his way to the front of the room, hoping to not draw any attention to himself at the risk of his classmates noticing the cherry-red cheeks and a scant smile that formed on his face. Of course, Ruby would always take notice of Gilbert, however, was much too focused on how utterly dashing he looked, sighing profoundly in awe.

Leaning slightly on the bare, splintering desks, Riley Carter folded her hands together as her eyes focused on Gilbert. Looking up, her ocean blue eyes caught his, though he couldn't help but silently laugh at the intrigued and amused expression that covered her face as she prepared herself to witness Gilbert Blythe participate in a spelling bee.

"Miss Carter, since you think distracting and jeopardizing my top student is okay, join the line and let us see how knowledgeable you are." Mr Phillips spat harshly.
