I awoke with my face stained from tears due to reasons I didn't want to explain. I had a suspicion that Abby was tipping off the judges in Maddie's favor, but it wouldn't be the first. My mother ran up the steps, in a frantic hurry, with a robe barely covering her body. my nightmare had evolved into a fit of cries and wails. Even little Clara stuck her head out of her room to see the source of such commotion
"What happened, Chlobird?" My mom asked
"She is a monster!" I cried, clinging to an old stuffed animal I had received years ago.
"It was only a nightmare." my mom cooked as she stroked my hair. I let my head fall onto her shoulder, as she absorbed the sound of my sniffles and wails.
"My turns are sloppy! And- And she killed me. " I chocked.
My mom stroked her hands through my hair and whispered encouraging words to help ease the pain. Ever since nationals when I fell out of my turns, Miss Abby has been using every chance she can to yell at me. At some points her abuse got to be too much, and I just broke down. Abby would sneer and berate me for my childish acts, and claim that real champions never cry.
Today was no different. My handsprings needed work, as acrobatic movements were always my weak points. Instead of landing mine as graceful and Paige had done moments before me, I had lost my footing and landed on my butt. All the girls had laughed, and Abby yelled for a while. She used crude nicknames, and words even my own mother wouldn't use, but I stood there and took it. When she had finished with me, she wore an excellent smile and patted Maddie on the head and told me I should be more like her.
After my mother had left my room, Clara came in and sat on my bed. She was holding her stuffed bunny close to her body. She looked up at my tear-stained face and gave me a hug.
"I love you Chlobird!" She whispered as she buried her head in my chest.
"Aww I love you too Clarabear!"
Clara returned to her room I stared up at the ceiling and wondered if I would ever get my shot at being Abby's golden girl. Suddenly my phone started playing and I turned over to see Paige's I.D. I grew befuddled as why my twinnie would be calling at three in the morning.
"Hello?" I asked, with my voice hoarse from crying show much
"Chloe! Good you're there!" She croaked. Paige's voice sounded desperate and I knew it was an emergency.
"Are you okay?" I asked fearful for what could happen to my best friend
"Maddie was home alone and threw a party!" She began. A party I wasn't invited to...
"And?" I replied.
"An intruder came in waving a gun around. He told us that if we called the cops he would kill us. He grabbed Maddie and I didn't see where they went, but I'm really scared." She whispered.
"Paige... I'm going to call the cops. Stay safe and away from the man."
"I don't want to get caught Clo! You have to do something and fast!" She whispered urgently.
Then the phone went silent, I was scared for my friends. They were all alone and the only adult was a gun wielding maniac.
"Mom!" I yelled out hoarsely, still not n shock from what was happening.
"What is it?" She replied from the room opposite of mine.
"It's Paige- they're in trouble..." I began, I explained the situation to her. She did her best to keep calm, but I could see the worry in her eyes. She made phone calls yelling at the person at the other end.
I was instructed to stay at the house, as my mother went to the house in which to Maddie's house. I knew the out come wasn't good, and when my mom came home she confirmed the suspicions. Maddie had been shot, but Paige was found hiding in the background. However, whenever I pressed my mom for facts about how badly Maddie was hurt, she burst into tears and kept saying she was sorry.
The next morning we decided to visit Maddie in the hospital since her mom was still in L.A. and unable to catch a flight for three more days. Maddie had suffered from a bullet lodging itself into her skull, but missed her brain. She also had many broken bones. The doctor said until the surgery they couldn't tell what would happen to her, but by the way the doctors said it we knew the outcome wouldn't be good.
"Maddie wake up!" I whispered into her ear. I held her hand, and felt the iciness course through it. I squeezed it gently, and swear I felt her squeeze back. Maddie and I weren't the closet, she preferred Kendall to everyone else. But I knew her the way a sister would, and I wanted her to come back and join me in dance class again.
We had to leave for dance. I had the lovely burden of relaying the news to Miss Abby. She did not take it well and she banged her fists on the wall and yelled, "Why do bad things happen to good people!" She then reconfigured the pyramid and started the rehearsal.
Chloe
Kendall. Brooke
Nia. Mackenzie. Paige. MaddieI was happy to be on top but it was for all the wrong reasons. It was because I did the right thing last night and I called the cops. It wasn't because of my dancing at all. Abby gave Brooke and I solos. Also she gave Paige, Mackenzie, and Nia a trio.
My solo seemed to be a tribute to Maddie, as it had all the advanced lyrical components that she often did. I tried my best, but I could tell that Abby was disinterested as she shooed me with her hand and told me 'that's good' and 'run it again'. Even in a coma, still Maddie was all that Abby cared about. But without her here this week, I could truly show Abby what I was capable of, and not just Maddie's replacement.Edited May 27th 2016
