[after school]
*Hazel's POV*
I hurriedly ran home, excited and impatient to text Harry for our plans on Friday. When I reached home, I pulled out my phone from my backpack and the piece of paper Harry gave me in my pocket. I seated myself at the kitchen table, unlocking my phone, eagerly. I scanned my eyes across my screen, hit Contacts, and added Harry's number in. My fingers fiddled across my keyboard and sent him a text, saying,
"Hey, is this Harry? It's Hazel x"
I chewed on my fingernails, waiting for a reply. My nerves suddenly left my phone and turned to the door. The knob was turning, as if someone was trying to get in. I froze. I didn't dare move. I was home alone and it made this moment even scarier. Seeing no sign of Harry's reply, I left my phone on the couch, slowly walking over to the door. I nervously reached for the knob, my hand trembling with fear. My heart leaped out of my chest as someone pounded on the door. I stepped back, eyeing the knob wiggling, trying to open.
"Damn I forgot the keys. Hazel should be here by now though." I heard someone say outside the door. Relief washed over me as I realized it was my dad's voice.
"I'll call her. Does she have a phone? What's her number?" I heard another voice say, sounding more ladylike. I pressed my ear against the door, hearing someone fumble through a bag. The lady was searching through her purse to call me. I once again stepped away from the door. We had a guest. Who was a woman. With my dad. Tears stung in my eyes as I shook my head to myself. I didn't want to see her. Even if she was the nicest person ever. I didn't want to see her.
I ran over to the living room, grabbing my phone, hearing my dad trying to pry the door open.
"Fine, call her. Her number is-"
My heart thumped and thumped in my chest. My phone was about to ring and if they heard it they'll know I'm home. I quickly ran to the kitchen, threw my backpack over my shoulder, and ran across the hall. I leaped inside my room, thinking of what to do. Then, I saw my window.
My window.
My only escape. I opened it and hopped out. Just as my feet landed on the ground, my ringtone started blaring through my phone. I cursed under my breath, seeing the number flash on my screen. I silently prayed and waited for it to end. When it did, I quickly put my phone on vibrate and snuck to my backyard and climbed over the wall. Then, I ran. I don't know where, I just ran. Across streets, past people. My feet started to ache as I was running. I stopped running, trying to catch my breath. I saw lights flashing behind me as I was slouched over to the ground. I turned around, seeing a carnival before my eyes. A giant Ferris wheel, bumper cars, and a flashing light sign saying "50TH ANNIVERSARY CARNIVAL". People were entering, it looked free to get in. There was a ticket booth in the middle of the whole carnival, papers of the ticket prices and the time the carnival closes glued or taped on the walls of the booth. I looked at my phone, seeing that it was 3:27 PM. I sighed, ready to continue running, but I stopped. I saw a figure that seemed familiar. The lean figure, the curly hair. The silhouette of this person gave me déjà vu. The person I was observing was with four other boys. Without having a thought, I walked over to the group of boys. As I got closer, I noticed one of them was Harry.
