Marie showed me the rest of the things I had to do each day and how. During all of this, I worried about Nathaniel. 'Would he accept me? What if he hates me? What if he's super mean? What if he's weird?' And mostly, 'What if he's hot?' I would basically be stuck with this guy for the entire summer so he better be worth the minimum wage. But I was certain that we would become friends. I mean, we had to.

"Now make sure Nathaniel does the Men's room because that little shit can always skip it because I'm not allowed to go in there." I laughed, "He's smart." Marie rolled her eyes, "That's what he thinks. Just wait until you meet the guy." She said. I swallowed, "Is he, um, nice Marie?" Marie looked at me, "Well, at the end of the summer you tell me yourself." I was beginning to get impatient. I had to know something about him. "Marie, please." She turned around and put her hands on my shoulders. "My nephew can be the most annoying thing on the planet." She sighed, "But he can also be the sweetest. And I know you'll get to see both sides." I smiled weakly and she let go. "Okay now that you're officially a lifeguard, you'll be needin' these things." She pulled a red shiny whistle from her shorts pocket and placed it in my palm along with a red shirt that said 'Lifeguard'. I smiled and pulled the shirt on and looped the whistle around my neck.

'I'm a lifeguard.' I thought.

Marie checked her watch, "God damn it, that boy is late for everything. I suppose you'll have to start without him. Pool opens in five minutes. You know where to go." I nodded slowly, still anxious. 'What if somebody drowns on my very first day?!' I shook my head to clear my thoughts. 'No. That will not happen because you won't let it.' I walked slowly towards the two lifeguard chairs and sat down on the left.

The pool was eerily quiet. No crazy kids, no helicopter moms, and no hairy middle aged men. It was just the pool and I. The pool was outdoors and around it was a beautiful golf course where my stepdad always played with his friends. Surrounding the pool was a hedge with a tall wooden fence. I waited. 3 more minutes. Pool opens at Nine. I pulled out my phone and surfed on tumblr, anxiously. A rustle in the bushes caught my attention. I hated scary movies and this kind of felt like one. To my surprise, a hand came over the fence. My eyes widened. 'Why do things like this always happen to me?' I thought miserably. Then the other hand came up too. I stood up. Should I run? I heard a grunting noise, probably the person pulling themselves up. A head and chest came over. It was a boy. Or probably I should say a guy. He looked about 18. The boy didn't seem to notice me, he was too busy trying to get over the fence. His hair was dark brown and he was wearing Ray Bans. His skin was nice and tan from what I could see and for some stupid reason he wasn't wearing a shirt. He swung his other leg over and dropped down. He turned and I could tell he was looking straight at me. I took a step forward.

"What the hell do you think you're doing?" I said.

He was several yards away, but my voice carried. He smirked and pulled out his phone. He looked at the time.

"'Scuse me?" He said, not looking at me.

I glared at him, "I said, what the hell do you think you're doing?" I repeated. He put his phone back in his pocket. "Watch your language, I can have you fired." He said calmly while putting his hands in his pockets. I laughed, "Oh yeah, because that's right; you own the damn place." He pulled off his sunglasses and I could see impatient blue eyes. Suddenly, I recognized him. My mouth dropped.

"Nye?!"
