Chapter 14
It seems like there are some things you can never run away from.
I was driving. The road in front of me was empty and like any person would I put my car in maximum speed. I could hear the roaring of the engine and it only encouraged me to try to go faster. Flashes of the road began to blur in my side window and for once I felt free.
Although everything felt fine here something nagged at the back of my mind, something important that I had forgotten. Part of me didn’t want to remember and I buried it in a dark corner of my mind. I was content where I was. I was free from any complications.
Suddenly my open road was invaded-a figure stood in the distance. I tried to slow down and steer the car but the machine wouldn’t obey. My heart quickened-already thinking the worse, I then shouted to the figure move but like the car it didn’t obey. Johanna entered my field of vision. A wave of memories rushed to my mind: The gang, the loss of my family and Brody…running away. Why was she here?
Time wasn’t on my side and these questions could not be answered as I tried to stop the car. I took a sharp intake of breath and I felt my hands shake as I tried to press on the brake. The wheel was locked and blocked.
Johanna turned and our eyes met before: Thud/thud.
Blood splattered the windows, forming spider web cracks and I felt the rabid beat of my heart stop.
I jerked awake from my dream to find my phone ringing. My skin felt cold and clammy and I didn’t bother to look in the car mirror to see the mess I was as I answered my phone.
“Hello-“, before I could even mutter another word a storm of questions flew at me.
“Rowan? Where are you? When are you coming-“
“Mom, calm down. I’m okay; I’m just caught up in some trouble. I’ll explain everything when I get back.”
I held the phone back in order to keep my eardrums in one piece as mom screamed, “What kind of trouble?!”
My phone vibrated; a text message.
“Hold on mom. I’ll get back to you.”
My phone didn’t recognize the number as I viewed the text. It was a simple two-worded message that made my heart stop: Find us. A picture was also sent: a picture of Johanna with her hands and feet bound and a strip of duct tape over her mouth.
