**this chapter is kind of short, sorry. but hopefully its interesting :) please tell me what you think**
“Are you alright?” Jess asked. We had just gone outside of the satellite from one of the safety exits. I don’t get scared of a lot of things but space was pretty scary. It’s dark and infinite and, well, terrifying. If someone were to be pushed out from the satellite they just would keep going forever. It’s likely they will die shortly after getting thrown into the abyss but still. It’s not a nice thought.
“I’m okay, let’s just focus on finishing this and getting back inside,” I said.
“Okay everyone,” R said, his voice being transmitted through our helmets, “Sort yourselfs in to groups. Then we are all going to go in separate directions and you need to use these maps to find your way to the nearest Rescue Point somewhere on the outside of the satellite, okay?” Commander R then handed out maps to everyone and told them which way they had to go. Jesse and I were told to go north. There were ladders all over the satellite so we could move around easily.
Jess took the lead and started climbing the ladder north. I got out my map and quickly checked which directly we needed to go.
“We need to go up for 50 metres then go left, Jess,”
“Okay. Why aren’t you climbing yet? Didn’t you hear, the ship is being attacked,”
“Haha. You’re very funny,”
“Don’t worry, I know that,”
“Shut up,” I tried to sound angry while saying this but Jess could somehow tell that I was still smirking.
“So Rose, why did you want a job at Ingin?”
“I needed a change. My life just wasn’t moving anywhere and to be honest, I wasn’t in the best mental situation either,”
“That sucks,” Jess said,
“Yeah well now I’m here, so I’m hoping things with pick up. What about you?”
“Short story or long story?”
“Long, definitely,”
“Well my cous-” Jess paused for a second, like he had forgotten what to say, “Uh, sorry. My cousin, Matt, used to be employed on the Ingin Mars base. He had left when I was 7 which upset me; he and I were best friend. He taught me a lot that my dad never got around to doing. He eventually worked for nine years working on floor one. When he got back after his contract, I was 16 and he told me all I wanted to know about the job, and it sounded perfect.”
We were still climbing at a steady pace and almost at the turning point.
“That’s really nice of him,” I said,
“Yeah.” Jess said coldly. He wasn’t telling me something, “Do we turn left here?”
“Yes,” I replied, “if we climb these ladders the Rescue Point should be at the end.”
After about five minutes of climbing we got to a large concave in the wall. It had an air lock department that Jess and I stepped into.
“Well done Jess and Rose,” R’s voice coming through our helmets startled me, “Just press the green button, leave the space-suits inside and I’ll see you tomorrow.” There was a static noise and Commander R was gone.
Jess pressed the button and a wall came down which shielded us from the dark, empty abyss of space. Finally. Then the air was slowly released into the room which let Jess and I know we could start taking off our suits. We both got out of them fairly quickly and left them hung up in the corner.
“I guess we will talk tomorrow,” Jess said and leaned in to hug me. I accepted and put my arms around him, “I’ll try and find you at lunch.”
“Okay, Jess, until tomorrow,”
“Till’ tomorrow,” He replied and saluted for some reason. I wonder whether I’ll regret becoming friends with someone this ridiculous later; when it will be too late to back out. What am I saying? I wouldn’t be able to back out of the friendship even now; I’m too invested in this idiot. I don’t mind though. Jess is sweet and I know he would look out for me if something bad happened. I’m glad we’ve gotten to know each other.
