Part I

It was late, really late actually. I should've been asleep already like everyone else, but I couldn't relax. We'd been drinking a lot and well, Bass just looked really good on guard duty.
"What's batman?" I blurted so suddenly it startled both of us out of a comfortable silence.
Bass made a noise in his throat that almost sounded like a laugh. "What are you talking about, Charlotte?"
I took another sip from my flask and explained "Remember? You saved all of us that one time...ya know." I swayed, and my butt slid off the damp log and landed in the mud. "You woosh clang slashed their throats. Then you said you were batman." I said very matter of factly.
He narrowed his eyes at me, then sauntered over across the fire, took my flask and sniffed. "What are you-jesus Charlotte, don't drink Miles' liquor. God knows what he needs to put in it to get a buzz." He sat back down on the log next to me at the fire, tossing the flask aside.
"Hey!" I said weakly. "Pay attention, old man. What's a batman?" Now, he laughed. I really like his laugh, he should smile more, I thought distractedly.
"Old man?" He asked in that rugged voice that actually sounded pretty hot. "Charlotte, if I were an old man, I don't think you'd constantly be giving me the bedroom eyes." He said with a smirk, sitting back to smirk at my mouth gaping open in shock. He chuckled.
"I do not...what are you...you're..no." I sputtered hopelessly "Are you drunk?!" I exclaimed.
"Charlotte." He said slowly, leaning in close. "You don't have to deny it. It's just us. Every one else is asleep." He smiled  and nudged my shoulder. "You can admit it."
I was flabbergasted. Could everyone see my feelings for Bass? I tried so hard to hide them. I mean, come on, the man killed my father and my brother. I should hate him. I should want him dead. But back in Willoughby, at his execution, I realized I didn't want him gone. Even if I couldn't have him the way I wanted, I didn't want him dead.
"You're crazy. You know that?" I got up and walked over to my space near Miles and mom.
"Good night, Charlotte!" Bass called quietly, laughing. I ignored him and pretended to go to sleep.
