Survival, Preparation, Courage. 3 things that now matter to you which were once obsolete, in the event of an epidemic, this became my worst nightmare and even more horrible things came on my journey. I had run out of supplies and my last barricade had fallen. The world I once new was now desolate and destroyed, all but the undead roam the streets. Everyone had been thrown into chaos and what was left of us had been thrown into disarray or cut off from the rest of what remained. People attempting to escape from the infected proved fatal for most. They’re too fast and not even I could stand the ongoing torment of this cruel world.
An effervescent golden ray of sun shot through the buildings, like a bullet through thin air and straight through my face. It gave me certain resentment on the world and it made me wonder how this retched plague actually started. I then grabbed all of what I could find and then I set off to recover fragments and cure the earth one infected at a time.
Incinerated bodies everywhere, from the innocent that tried to escape to the onslaught of infected were strewn across the road the litter. The military, in an effort to quell the sea of disease, carpet bombed the entire eastern seaboard. I guess they obviously didn’t give a fuck about all the innocent lives they took. I remember the news broadcasters and how his voice was so shaky and he kept apologising to everyone and that it was for the greater good and how we were all heroes. I dropped my bag and gave a moment of silence to those how had fell even those who became undead they were once human and my respect had not perished. I was lucky enough to have been underwater when they bombed everyone. I still believe I was kept alive for a reason.
Had to keep moving, these words kept playing like a stuck record inside my head, I had to find a way out of this city, as all of the main roads and highways were piled up with cars and military vehicles blocked every road as well even the ‘back doors’ into the city were blocked. I moved on to a Local supermarket that I remember frequently visited. I remember a girl with long brown hair and eyes that were as blue as the Sea, Her voice was soft like silk and I remember how I was always nervous around her. I never got her name which is a regret I carry with me forever, but still memories are the only thing to cling onto in the world.
It didn’t have much in it, rotting bodies and a few tins of food. I found a flashlight hanging from one of the decaying bodies’ hand. I had to pry it from is cold dead hand, literally. I put it in my backpack and picked up some batteries and put them in my backpack as well. I cautiously walked to the front of the store as I stepped over a body I knocked it and it sent they shelves flying I jumped out of my skin and ran to cover behind something, I didn’t know much about the zombies but I knew one thing sound attracted them. I was lucky this time there were no infected in earshot.
I didn’t discover anything else in the store, so I kept moving, searching every car, truck and apartment along the way. I managed to scrounge up enough food for three weeks, a flashlight, a pistol and a cricket bat. I kept thinking to myself what was left of the earth, was there even anything left. But I couldn’t give up hope.
An opportunity caught my eye, as I noticed that one of the roads didn’t have as much blockage as all the others. So I took the risk, and crawled ever so precariously through the open door of a car which was also holding the weight of the blockade up, just as I was about to step out when I heard the entire pyramid begin to creak, I quickly jumped out and away from the cars. Luckily the creak was a false alarm. When I came out the other side I came across a fire station which was bad news. The infected had taken over the building. I contemplated whether or not I should try to get into the building, I decided that I should try to get in there because there might be something I need in there. I had to take a chance.
It seemed like an impossible task, to get into that fire station, but I knew my own like the back off my hand, and I also knew that there was a back entrance to the station that could be used to gain entry undetected. There were few bodies scattered around inside of the fire station most of them dressed in uniform, it looked like they fought till to last man but they weren’t able to survive. In could tell they fought tooth and nail to survive as they had many fortifications in and around the station in an effort to hold ‘them’ off. They also had about six months worth of supplies as well. I grabbed some of the supplies but as I was grabbing them I heard the rustling of a fireman jacket, when I turned my head I saw one off the fireman’s arm twitch ever so slightly to the left and move back quickly to its original position. I knew that they weren’t dead so I made for the back door as soon as my hand hit the door knob I heard a sudden, sharp and ear-splitting pain come from behind me.
